Hammies Burgers commonwealth

2

Today, let’s check out Hammies Burgers at Commonwealth Crescent hawker center. It is a quite the gem of an affordable tiny burger place serving pretty hearty burgers. The largely unheard of family-run burger joint located in a rustic old-style HDB food center. I was recommended to this burger place by a friend who knows about my quest for great burgers in Singapore. Hammies is touted to offer burgers at a quality and price point even beating Shake Shack and Wolf Burgers. Let’s see what they have on offer.

Lets dine-in at Hammies today with a try of their various burger choices
Lets dine-in at Hammies today with a try of their various burger choices.

Hammies had been operating for 2 years at the Commonwealth Crescent food center. It is the only outlet in Singapore and sits in the second floor of the NEA managed food center which has a wet market on the first floor. Also, the neighbourhood is lined with several old-school shops built in the 70-80s era, some even has their old metal sliding shutters intact. It tads reminds you of Chef western at the nearby Tanglin Halt with similarly great Western food.

A tale of 3 selections

Moreover, Hammie’s menu selections are simple. There are three selections of burgers available, namely beef, chicken and fish. The staff is cheerful and helpful, a young lady takes out order and jots it down on a lined exercise book, and shouting some instructions into the kitchen area. After chatting with an auntie helping out at the store, that where I learnt that Hammies is a family business, with her son doing the cooking, and her daughter handling orders.

Staple Cheeseburgers

Furthermore, their beef burgers are sandwiched between two toasted buns. Patties are packed with melted cheese and starts at $7 for a single patty and $9.50 for a double beef patties. Furthermore, their beef burger is their staple and your typical run of the mill cheeseburger. It is topped with caramelized onions, cheddar, pickled jalapenos and their homemade burger sauce.

Moreover, there is an option to upgrade your regular fries to tatter tots (hash browns) for a dollar extra.  If you are hungry, the double patty is a no-brainer as the single is pretty tiny in my opinion.

You can opt for tatter tots (hash browns) from your regular fries for a dollar more
You can opt for tatter tots (hash browns) from your regular fries for a dollar more.

Also, their chicken burgers ($6) is their most affordable of the lot. They are essentially are of the southern style type, with a crispy fried core sandwiched between homemade coleslaw and their trademark sauce between their tiny toasted buns.

Regular fries, which goes well with paired sauce
Regular fries, which goes well with paired sauce.

Is that fish and chips?

Moreover, their fish burgers are an odd but rather delightful bunch. However, though I found the fillet tad oily on the outside, the interior is nice and juicy. Also, priced at $7.50, the fish variant is their most pricey starting price of the 3 burgers offered. But you do get what you pay for.

Fish burger or fish fillet with buns? You decide!
Hammies fish burgers is worth trying. Fish burger or fish fillet with buns? You decide!

The fish burger is essentially a giant fish fillet packed between buns and sweet Tartar sauce. Hammie’s fish burgers tad reminds me tad of the offerings in fish and chips, especially with their Alaskan Pollock patty paired with their standard chips which are sticking out of the burger buns.

Great price for the offerings

The thing which strikes me is that their burgers are incredibly affordable. Their cheese burger starts at $6 served with a side of fries but without a drink. Notably, there are 2 fruit juice stores and 1 traditional drink store here in the hawker center, and most are closed in the afternoon.

Be prepared for a long wait

Moreover, at its core, Hammies a lunch place. They are open from 11am to 5pm daily, and closed the entire day 2 days per week on Mondays and Tuesdays. Of course, it is advisable to avoids the peak lunch periods from 12 to 1.30pm. I was told that patrons usually start queuing from 10am onwards.

One gripe which often frustrates patrons is how slow the store churns out burgers. Each burger is made to order and casually prepared with the burger chef taking their time. Additionally, the lack of physical queues in front of the store is not indicative of the underlying wait times.

Their burgers are good, but not a over 2 hour-kind of waiting time good.

Let down by long wait times

A 1-2 hour wait is not uncommon. This is even when dining after lunch peak hours from 2pm onwards. I experienced a wait of 2 hours despite not even a visible queue in front of the store. Moreover, even on quiet days with a lack of queues, the burger joint is still packing at least a 40mins wait time at 3pm.

Moreover, coming from 3pm also risks the store selling out towards the end of the day, much to disappointment to many. Still a 2 hour wait time is unheard of in hawker centers. Notably the store also does call-in and food deliveries, so it pays to reserve a burger before dining.

Hence, dining at Hammies is not recommended if you do not have the luxury of time and a short lunch break. Their burgers are good, but not a 2 hour-kind of waiting time good. However, you could book you burgers early right at opening from 11am. The burgers are no-where close to burger production efficiency we seen in fast-food outlets. I would say, there is still much room for improvement in terms of kitchen process optimisation. Which would otherwise give Hammie’s my recommendation for top marks.

All in all, I would recommend you to simply shortlist Hammie’s Burgers. It does not get a good recommendation let down by extremely long waiting times with room for improvement. Otherwise, their offerings of good quality burgers at a great price might not be enough to make up for it.

Broadway American Diner Capitol

0

Broadway burgers is an American diner, which prepares made-to-order authentic Burgers, dogs and shakes situated in the heart of Central Singapore at The Capitol. Broadway American Diner sits just beside city hall and its MRT station. Let’s see what’s on offer in the snazzy and chill establishment.

The store front of Broadway American Diner at The Capitol.

The restaurant has a chill interior. It is decked out like an American diner, but not as sazzy like the Peppermill one we visited previously in Vegas. It is complete with retro-style plush red booth seating across two floors via an overhead loft, and with an open bar area with the view of the entire kitchen in-tow.

Service is prompt and friendly. Also, your food comes out pretty quickly after ordering, and you can see the kitchen staff working on your meals just behind the counter in the open concept kitchen.

What’s on the menu?

Moreover, Broadway offers a selection of 6 different burgers, with half of them comprising of beef burgers. They are brought to you by their resident Chef Edmond Tan. I would recommend their Black Angus Beef & Egg Burger ($16).

Black Angus Beef & Egg Burger ($16). It is a quite a loaded burger with potpourri of bacon and onion rings too
Black Angus Beef & Egg Burger ($16). It is a quite a loaded burger with potpourri of bacon and onion rings too.

Also, I found the Angus beef patty it comes with really juicy and sandwiched with melted cheddar cheese and a wholesome egg wrap. Your beef burger is topped with mayonnaise, chilli and black Pepper Mushroom Sauce for additional taste.

Their burgers has a flame-grilled smokey taste typical of American burgers. The patties are juicy and well-marinated too

Authentic American burgers

Additionally, their burgers has a flame-grilled smokey taste typical of American burgers. The patties are juicy and well-marinated too. There is a tinge of freshness in the beef patties. Also, in typical American-fashion, they are best eaten with hand and can be a rather messy affair being loaded with sauces.

Furthermore, Broadway American Diner burgers are also well-priced. You have an option to upsize your standard cheeseburger to a double Black Angus cheese burger ($22). Also, at $6 more it comes topped too with American Cheese, Red Onions, Cucumber Pickles and seasoned with Thousand Island Dressing.

Additionally, next best to the Angus burger be their BBQ Beef Burger ($16). It packs quite a fair bit under the hood loaded with Fried Onion Rings and Smoky Bacon topped on a Beef Patty laced with melted cheddar cheese, apple butter and flavoured with barbecue sauce. Also, I found their menu offerings good value despite being centrally located in town. Broadway price point is in stark contrast to the other more expensive restaurants here in the Capitol plaza.

Non-beef burgers and Hotdog

Moreover, for non-beef options, right up are chicken and vegetable selections. This includes the Buttermilk Chicken & Cheese ($16). It is a potpourri of Fried Chicken, topped with American Cheese, Cabbage Slaw, dressed with Honey Mustard Dressing.

Moreover, bacon lovers should enjoy the Pork Jowl Burger $16. It comprises of grilled Pulled Pork, and similarly topped with Coleslaw, Green Apples, Arugula, Dijon Mustard, Smokey Spicy Ketchup. Wrapping up the burger selections is the Garden Burger $16 Vegetable Patty, Grilled Portobello Mushroom, Smashed Avocado, Pico De Gallo, Pesto, Crème Fraiche

Selections

Moreover, all of Broadway burgers are served in a home-baked sesame wheat bun. They claim to use only organic flour and natural ingredients. Also, these fluffy and crisp buns are freshly made by their bakery team daily.

Interestingly prior to their Christmas menu, Broadway was running a meter-long hotdog special. For where $30 grants you a meter-long American staple matched with an equally long bun and topped with chili and ground beef.

And try their hotdogs

Also on the menu are well-priced hotdogs, though they get my secondary recommendations. Broadway hotdogs sets you back from $8 a pop and comes with a variety of toppings. For instance, their Frankfurter Roll ($8) is a pork sausage dog. It comes with Sauerkraut, Mustard, Fried Capers, Gruyere Cheese, Russian Dressing, sandwiched between a lightly toasted Hot Dog Bun.

Moreover, the second dog on the menu is their Chilli Beef Hot Dog ($10). I found their Beef Sausage a nice touch, it has a Smoked taste and topped Chilli Con Carne, Pico De Gallo and Mozzarella Cheese. Similarly, your Hot Dog Bun is served with fries sides. You can option to upgrade them to curly fires and in-addition their buffalo wings ($12). They are great for sharing.

Try their signature milkshakes

An American diner won’t be complete without a home selection of Milkshakes. Moreover, Broadway milkshakes are just right- well-decorated but not over-lavishly like the ones we seen at Blacktap burgers at Marina Bay Sands. Also, their shakes notably not as sinfully thick to consumer like the crazy ones at Heart attack grill. Also, the shakes are more conservatively priced too at $14 a pop and available in the regular staple flavors of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, oero and even local flavors of milo or chendol to your liking. However, I would recommend sticking to neapolitan flavors.

Interior booths

All in all, Broadway gets a recommendation for their authentic American burgers with a good price, prompt friendly service and American diner ambience (complete with classic booth seats) to boot too, despite situated in an expensive neighbourhood. This coupled with a value offering in a rather accessible part of town does makes Broadway American Diner one of the few hidden gems here in City hall.

Intel 11th Gen NUC with Panther and Tiger Canyon

0

It is the time of the year where Intel would announce the refresh of their tiny mini box PCs known as the NUCs. I am a big fan of their tiny power little PCs. This generation round, Intel is offering the NUC 11 Performance with a choice of two Tiger Canyon and three Phantom Canyon systems featuring Tiger Lake processors. Lets take alook what’s on offer. They are expected to arrive in early 2021. Performance wise, the 11th Gen NUC are equipped with similar same five i3 to i7 flavours. This range from the Core i3-1115G4 to the Core top-selection i7-1185G7.

The NUC 11 be available in 5 processors in the familiar 4 x 4 inch chassis we had seen since the first NUCs
The NUC 11 be available in 5 processors in the familiar 4 x 4 inch chassis we had seen since the first NUCs.

A larger selection of Moreover, all 5 NUC variants comes with Socket on Chip 28 W processors which boost above 4 GHz. The Core i3 includes a lesser GPU though, with the new Xe Graphics reserved for the Core i5 and Core i7 “Pro” line of Tiger lake with Intel Core i5-1145G7 and Core i7-1185G7.

Interestingly, do not expect much improvements in multi-core performance for this generation of 4 core Intel Core CPUS. Early benchmarks point to less lacklustre improvements in performance over the previous generation power efficient hexa-core SoC for notebooks based on the Comet Lake (CML-U).

intel 11th gen NUC has a new blacked out front face with standard and tall chassis heights to accommodate a 2.5" internal drive
intel 11th gen NUC has a new blacked out front face with standard and tall chassis. The additional height allows you to accommodate a 2.5″ internal drive.

Disappointing performance upgrades

For instance, the Panther canyon core i7 offerings- the 1165G7 on the regular NUC 11 line clocks in at a 10492 passmark CPU score. A disappointing result as the previous-generation 6 core Intel Core i7-10710U offers a similar sub 10064-12000 CPU score. Things are however better on the Core i5 with the newer 4 core Intel Core i5-1135G7 clocking in at 9771. In comparison to the Intel Core i7-10510U @ 1.80GHz at 7346, a 24% improvement.

While offering 4 cores over the entire range seems like a step back with 6 cores being offered in the. The single cores are each more powerful. This would be beneficial if you are running single or lightly thread workloads requiring 4 cores or less. However, you would be out of luck if you need high core environments, like using running virtual machines. Here I would recommend the previous-gen NUC 10 offering up to 6 cores and 12 threads.

While the new Xe Graphics appears to be a saving grace, early benchmarks points to performance only on par the AMD Radeon HD 8970M or Nvidia GeForce GTX 680M released 8 years ago. It is tad not too different from an upgraded Iris Pro in absolute performance. So don’t expect to be running Cyberpunk 2077 well on these integrated graphics.

However, the if Intel’s Skull Canyon NUC’s appeals to you, you are in luck. The Intel NUC 11 Enthusiast (Phantom Canyon) for the first time offers discrete graphics. This is done via a GeForce RTX 2060 last-gen discrete graphics paired with an Intel Core i7-1165G7.

A familiar upgrade layout

Moreover, the Intel 11th gen Tiger Canyon NUC comes in the 4 inch by 4 inch square form factor which the device is known for. They are similarly available in “Tall H” and “Tall Q” chassis at 51 mm and 56 mm tall respectively. This allows you to mount an internal 2.5” drive on top of M.2 storage options. Memory is via two SO-DIMM DDR4 slots (up to 64GB).

The tall NUC on the right with the xpandable add on module which can add a secondary output ports
The tall NUC on the right with the xpandable add on module which can add a secondary output ports.

The other main selling point of the NUC 11 is the official rating to run the system 24/7. Not that the earlier NUC versions can’t do that. In-fact previous-gen NUCs had been proven to run well 24/7 for years home lab environments. I can guess it is just a marketing certification this time round.

Lastly, one of the main exciting points of the NUC is the inclusion of an expandable add on module. Here, you can add a secondary port, such as a second Ethernet port, or video out. This option is available only on the tall chassis versions.

All in all, as much as I adore the NUC, I find intel 11th gen NUC not much a revolutionary upgrade. They stuck to what is tried and tested. This is also considering their similarly dissapointing compute units were not well-received either. Performance-wise, the lack of 6 core CPUs is disappointing though, as 6 to 8 cores for the i7 is a natural evolution step. This makes the 11th gen NUC less of a compelling offering of an upgrade.

Moreover, Ce va li main courses are surprisingly reasonably priced for an upmarket restaurant. Selections are priced from $28 for a Vegetarian cauliflower steak and going up to $128 per main course for a 500g Whole lobster with yuzu bearnaise and truffle.

Also, here, average offerings priced about the $40 mark per main course. It is comparable to the offerings at to Ramsey’s bread street kitchen we checked out previously. It can cost up to $100 per person here for 3 courses with service and tax. Hence, though Ce va li is not what we call affordable, it does make up for quality served in a fine dining setting.

In addition, dessert prices range from $15 to $20, with special chefs “blind dish” selections ranging from $28 to $68. Also, one dessert great for sharing and packs a statement would be their Ice cream and sorbet ($15)

All in all, Ce va li is a great place to chill with great food and an awesome ambience and views overlooking the Singapore Marina Bay and central business district. The higher than average price point does make it out of reach to most, especially for repeat trips. Though is not as outrageously priced as I thought it to be. Ultimately, if the high life is one you are after, this is one of the few fine places to live it.

Shashlik Restaurant Russian Western

2

Shashlik Restaurant is one serving Russian cuisine. It is inconspicuously tucked on the upper 6th floor of Far East shopping center. It is not to be confused with another mall of a similar name by Far East plaza.

Shashlik Restaurant interior at Far East plaza
Shashlik Restaurant interior at Far East plaza.

Also, the mall has a throwback oldie feel typical of malls in Orchard road in the 70s and 80s, pretty much stuck in time. Due to the unfriendly Escalator layout, Elevators are the recommended way up to the mall 6th floor.

Shashlik Restaurant Oxtail stew, a classic favorite

Moreover, at its heart Shashlik Restaurant is a steak house. It is one with a Hainanese flair too. One which the restaurant is proud of in showcasing on their menu introduction. Also, Shashlik Restaurant had been round for a good over decade, with the restaurant undertaken by a new family management a couple of years back as shared by the friendly service staff. Speaking hainanese helps too to break the ice.

Steaks to your liking

You get tabled waitered with friendly service. Shashlik steaks are available in a variety of styles. I would recommend their house steak, the Shashlik of Beef ($38) done medium-rare. It is named after the establishment.

Also, their steaks, like their Tenderloin Steaks ($36-45) are soft and juicy enough to be consumed by itself, but yet not overly bloody. For taste, it is best paired with a side of sauce. The quality sits on-par with Mariner’s corner and better than the offerings of The Ship.

Try their Oxtail stew

Another recommendation includes their Oxtail stew. It is a Hainanese western classic. However, despite bones taking up almost half of your dish, you still get generous serving chunks of the oxtail, which is really tender and flavourful. It is served with a toast bread and broccoli sides.

Additionally, A full selection of wines are also available on request, served by the glass or bottle, if need be.

Flaming Desserts

Desserts are quite a spectacle here at Shashlik Restaurant. Their Baked Alaska ($18-$28) is a flaming flambéed with dark rum. It is served on a bed of wellington of ice cream and sponge cake, covered with meringue.

Additionally, you could make out that a couple of the old timers here had been working for the establishment. The senior staff are quick to tell you the history of the restaurant they had been with for most part of their service carriers. This includes refurbishments to change of owners.

Fancy Pancake ($14) is a caramelised banana dessert, brushed with freshly whipped cream and wrapped in homemade crêpe, served with ice cream

Furthermore, during COVID-19 circuit breaker restrictions, reservations are required for every dine-in. Also, during festive periods, a booking fee is required to secure you table.

Wrapping up, Shashlik Restaurant still maintains much of its cozy and rustic flair. It is dimly lit and lined with wood wall panels. Also, it is tad neither than what I recalled before they renovated. It does bare a close resemblance to other family-run Hainanese steakhouses like the Mariner’s Corner steakhouse and The Ship steak house we explored previously.

All in all, Shashlik Restaurant is quite a gem of a restaurant located in the heart of the Orchard district. If you love an old school dining experience with reasonably quality food, with friendly and great service to boot, Shashlik Restaurant is definitely one for your shortlist.

Happy New 2021!

0

Happy New 2021! I believe 2020 is a year which not many would like call memorable. Despite the turn of events, particularly what COVID-19 did to disrupt the world as we see it today.

Stocktaking memorable 2020 events, first we saw the general elections in Singapore. Remarkably, it was one which went well despite being held during the peak of the global pandemic.

Moreover, through the year, the retail sector had seen a drastic slow down in sales, with more people avoiding crowded places, even at public spots near home. On the contrary, home furnishing and IT sectors had seen less than proportionate gains with the influx of working from home arrangements.

Socially distanced hawker center with iconic crossed out seats reminding you of 2020
Socially distanced hawker center with iconic crossed out seats reminding you and distinctly 2020.

As we call it 2020 the end of the decade

Additionally, COVID-19 does bring the idea of remote work to a whole new level. With a drastic drop in public transport travel and roads and subways being nearly eerily empty, even during regular peak timings. Of course, international air travel saw the biggest hit this year, with our natural carrier Singapore Airlines reportedly retrenching at least 2500 employees.

An empty MRT during peak travel period, an unreal sight
An empty MRT during peak travel period, an unreal sight.

The retail sector did take a beating too, with many stores on the high street noticeably shuttered for good. The big casualty being the Robinsons chain, which closed after operating in Signature for 162 years. Thankfully, our medical scene remained resilient, with much thanks going out to our front line medical staff.

Accelerating remote working

Also, we had first seen the scare of SARs back in the 2000s where the concept of e-learning/remote learning was something revolutionary, even back then where widespread adoption of teleconference or videoconferencing is. Still technology as an enable had brought people well during this trying times.

Besides supermarkets, IKEA is one of the best performers during the COVID-19 lock down given increased work from home arrangements.

Remarkable is the rapid adoption of smart technologies to reach out the others. The power of the smart phone, enabling video conferencing anywhere, remote yoga or virtual runs like the Straits Times, to ordering out using food deliveries.

During the low periods, I saw myself looking back and writing on my past international travel trips I had not much of the opportunity to do so. We can see that in my travel write up on Stockholm as well as my Cruise previous year with Royal Caribbean.

Beyond 2020

What are your new year’s resolutions? We can expect most resolution to include some form of health-related or financial goal resolution. Let it be, making a savings target, paying off debts, exercising more or reaching a diet or weight goal. Humorously, the thing we be sure of is that we won’t expect the seasonal surge of gym-goers for the early part of this year to be as prevalent with crowd limits in place.

Whichever the case, we can be rest assured that we will end up stronger. Lets go into 2021 with an eye of optimism. Wishing you a Happy New 2021!

Social Outcast Bedok

Social outcast is a Muslim owned burger western joint serving quality and affordable wood fire smoke and charcoal grilled food at Sipang Bedok area. Let’s do a casual dine-in today to check out their offerings.

Moreover, the halal burger joint is now tucked on the 2nd floor of the Bedok market at Sipang Bedok. It is a popular late night supper place. Also Social outcast occupies two hawker store units. One comprising of an ordering counter and the order, where the kitchen is located. Dining ambience is generally chill.

The funky hawker center

Seating spread between a mix of 8-10 rectangular and round tables seating about 4-5 each.  Notably this entire corner here in the hawker center is dedicated to the establishment.

They used to operate out of Tampines

A walk down memory lane Social outcast started out as a coffee shop western food burger place. Ever since they had moved to a more buzzing location here in Bedok. I was greeted by an enthusiastic lady who introduced me to the various menu items, who I vaguely remember also chancing upon the last time I visited Social Outcast first outlet at their Tampines loop branch.

Burger selections

At its heart, Social outcast is a burger place. They offer a selection of six burgers priced from the $12 to $21 range. Recommendations include their signature Outcast possible meats ($21). Your burger comes served with a charcoal-grilled beef patty topped with wood fire smoked lamb chunks packed between toasted brioche buns. I got to try their double patty version. The patties are fresh and packed compact with lots of flavour, though I found the green picked chimichurri garnish tad an oddity.

Outcast possible meats burger ($21)

My next recommendation be their Royal Mushroom beef ($15) and is the 2nd of the three burgers offered. It essentially a mushroom beef burger topped with onions and smoked mushrooms glazed with melted blue cheese. The beef has the same wooden unique grilled taste which is paired well with the mushrooms, albeit its smaller serving which may not be too filling for larger eaters.

Non-beef options

Moreover, their Smoked chicken and egg burger ($12) and Smoked salmon scrambled egg with sesame mayo ($15) are one of their more affordable options and a more conservative and familiar option. Your shredded chicken is woodfire smoked and topped with an egg, pickled onion, and loaded with sesame mayo.

Furthermore, I found their Smokey Salmon burger bearing a resemblance to muffin breakfast buns, complete with Scrambled eggs, and sesame mayo packed between the same brioche buns.

Curly fries are great

Also, all your burgers are served with curly fires, tad abit of a throwback to A&W classic offerings. This beats the potato chips they served back in Tampines. However, I found their brioche burger buns tad on the crumby side. They do not hold up their integrity very well in-hand.

Social Outcast Bedok Got curly fries. A nice touch and upgrade to the chips provided previously at their old Tampines branch

Sides and made to order steaks

However, I found their burger offerings tad on the more premium end of the spectrum and their prices have tad increased a fair bit, since they operated out of their old coffee shop spot in Tampines.

Spicy chicken wings, tad an American staple offering
Spicy chicken wings, tad an American staple offering.

Additionally, besides burgers notable things to try here be their spicy chicken wings. These devil smoked drumlets starts at $6 for a tray of 6, not a bad offering. Also, Social outcast also offers special made to order beef steaks.

Steaks, made to order
Steaks, made to order.

Also, they are cooked to your done-ness and great for sharing. Do note that you need to indicate your steak order one day in advance by calling them to place an order for a platter.

Social Outcast Bedok Steak works in the kitchen
Steak works in the kitchen.

In addition, Social outcast has increased their prices and expanded their menu range to position themselves with a more upmarket menu offering at a higher entry price point. Presumably to captialise on the market segment dominated in the light of burger incumbents like Fat boys burgers, and Wolf Burgers for instance. Their sub $15 burgers with fries still offers great value which positions the eatery as a strong competitor in the gourmet burger market. However, I would avoid anything priced above $20, as their premium offerings still needs some work.

All in all, Social outcast at Bedok Marketplace Shopping Complex still holds their position as a burger joint with a reasonable price value offering in the already crowded gourmet burger market. With a decent selection of burgers and side selections with a neat ambience to boot.

Alma by Juan Amador Goodwood hotel

Alma By Juan Amador is a fine dining restaurant serving European Fusion food in a rather luxurious setting. They serve a variety of premium European fusion dishes and are located in the Goodwood hotel grounds. Today I shall touch on their Michelin one-starred lunch course menus in a rundown

Alma Juan Amador at Welcome to Goodwood hotel!
Welcome to Goodwood hotel!

Notably, the restaurant sits just outside the Hotel grounds by the outdoor carpark facing Lucky plaza. Hence you do not actually need to enter the hotel. The restaurant itself is cosy and not necessarily large.

Personalised fine dining

Moreover the establishment was awarded the Michelin Guide travellers’ Choice in 2019. In the 2019 Michelin guide. When you are in the one star service is all about everything and I can say the service here is attentive and responsive enough to be warranted a one star rating. Also, you have dedicated service staff assigned to your table with undisrupted personised services. The restaurant also has a large selection of wine to your choosing from your sommelier.

Michelin course sets

Dining at Alma usually revolve around a selection of pre-defined set course meals. This allows the chef to control and perfect their servings typical of such fine dining restaurants. Additionally, Alma’s course menu is pretty standard but pretty affordable for a Michelin starred restaurant. A 4 Course Menu sets you back $65++ per pax.

Alma Juan Amador Kanpachi Brandade appetizer
Kanpachi Brandade appetizer.

There are two parts to your appetizers. First off is their Kanpachi Brandade ($21). It is a small light dish comprising of Beetroot, Crab and soaked in lemon broth. Garnished with small edible yellow flowers. It has a zesty taste to it and nice to

Crispy handmade Tofu
Crispy handmade Tofu.

Next up is their Crispy Tofu. The restaurant touts that this Tofu is homemade. It is lightly pan-fried and served in a shallow bowl with a potato slice and Wild Mushrooms. It is topped shredded vege and a sauce base of Foie Gras Emulsion. The sauce is rich and soaks into the bottom of the tofu, which you should eat lengthwise to get the best of the clear silky tofu and the sauce.

Like with every fine dining, the unique blend and arrangement of exotic ingredients sauces and spices does give you an interesting taste in rather unique ways. Also, if portions are what you are after, dining at Alma By Juan Amador is not for you.

A choice of four mains

For mains, you have a larger variety of choices, four choices in fact. I would recommend their Lobster Pasta. You get thin al-dente Angel Hair Pasta tossed in Hijiki Seaweed and diced Broccoli bits. The lobster is shredded and topped with leafy greens on the top of your pasta.

it's fine dining, so expect the mains to have more plate than food here. Its a mouthful of taste all infused into one
it’s fine dining, so expect the mains to have more plate than food here. Its a mouthful of taste all infused into one.

Additional mains choices includes ‘Kuhlbarra’ Barramundi, Iberian’ Pork Jowl (with Cevennes Onion, Manjimup Winter Black Truffle infused in Ham Broth) and Angus Short Rib (with carrots, pomegranate and spiced jus). Also, in fine dining, everything is all about taste depth and presentation. Also do not expect any large portions of foods here too. Though you can easily gulp down the pasta ball in one mouth, it is meant to be eaten slowly and appreciated.

Angel Hair Pasta tossed in Hijiki Seaweed and diced Broccoli bits
Angel Hair Pasta tossed in Hijiki Seaweed and diced Broccoli bits.

Do note that the last two cost an additional $12++ and $18++ extra top ups on top of the set menu pricing. Also, the Barramundi dish is served with sides of  white kimchi, potatoes and bouillabaisse. The Barramundi is a fish a supreme quality sea fish known for its white, firm flesh and delicious taste. Low in fat.

I didn’t get to try the Pork Jowl or rib as right off Alma’s recommendation. The restaurant Chefs in-fact strongly recommends the whole table to have the same number of courses to enjoy the dining experiences, as such, the menu is tailored to be enjoyed by the whole table.

Wrapping up

Wrapping up is Desserts with Vanilla Crème- Cherries. Meringue and Sake Lees. They are tad like little mini flowers sprinkled on your Creme. Additional dessert choices includes Apple Compote, Hokkaido Milk Ice Cream or the Apple Tart Tatin with costs $12 extra.

Vanilla Crème and Cherries dessert

Also, in typical European fashion, bread is served. But they are served (3 piece buns) in wooden breadboxes infused with coffee beans. An interesting touch indeed. Though do note that additional bread per basket costs $5 extra.

In conclusion, Alma By Juan Amador offers a rather unique multi-sensory European fusion and vegetarian-friendly dining experience through the rather unique dishes we had today. Focusing on the gustatory system, senses, and high culinary art. However, it is pricey and is not really a place you would see yourself eating daily on a budget. But what you pay is what you get and is definitely one which you know had tried and pretty much a talking point on its own.

Merry Christmas 2020 and a Happy new year

0

Merry Christmas 2020 and a Happy new year! This year’s Christmas is pretty much like no other we had seen for the past decade at least. It is a muted one and rather one of solidarity and not to mention the boon of remote work.

A muted Christmas 2020

Also, looking at the festive around town, we can see minimal Christmas decorations around town, reflects this sentiment. Light ups and mall decorations being more conservative this year, to reflect the hardships in the retail sectors. Events are cancelled or kept minimal with strict crowd controls.

This year is a quiet Christmas, and one of solidarity
This year is a quiet Christmas, and one of solidarity.

An industry shakedown

Additionally, the rise of the pandemic as we know it had shaken much of the retail and hospitality sectors. But there are festive cheers still to be had. Whether it is hunkering down in your socially-distanced groups of 5 for Xmas dinners, to remote Zoom Christmas carols and fund raisers. There is still much joy to spread, whether it is at home or abroad.

Also, the same can’t be said for most of the market. Business in the hospitality and food and beverage sectors had dropped drastically. Moreover, the retail sector had seen a drastic slow down in sales, up to a dip of 90% overall as more people avoiding crowded places.

An empty sushi restaurant during the Singapore circuit breaker period
An empty sushi restaurant during the Singapore circuit breaker period.

On the contrary, the pandemic had yielded few winners too. Home furnishing, supermarkets and IT sectors had seen less than proportionate gains with the influx of working from home arrangements boosting annual sales as much as 75% on the news.

All in, with just about 5 days left in 2020 to the end of the decade, may 2021 be one of change as we see and and uphill climb from here on. Merry Christmas 2020 and a happy new year ahead!

Simple Burgers

2

Simple Burgers is a relatively new player in the gourmet burger scene serving affordable made-to-order burgers. They have branches in Serangoon MyVillage mall as well as Suntec city. Notably they are operated by the iSteaks western chain group. Hence, it is not uncommon to find an iSteaks beside a simple burgers outlet.

Simple burgers branch at myvillage Serangoon

Moreover, thier menu selections are simple. I would call it largely sitting in a market segment between premium and vanilla burger options. You have a choice of three beef (cheese) burger options, and a myriad of regular staples at $7 a burger such as pork, chicken and fish burger patty options.

Simple Burgers ordering counter
The restaurant ordering counter, with most seating outdoors.

Moo, oink, cluck

Here, premium choices include Double bacon and cheese $18, as well as their Natural Beef Snr burger ($13). Their basic natural beef burger, which is like a premium cheeseburger in a sense, sets you back $9, just for the burger itself.

Simple Burgers Natural Beef Snr burger ($13)

Furthermore, I particularly like Simple burgers market segmentation of their menu. A basic set meal from the $7 burger range with fries sets you back minimally $11 tops without any additional condiment or drinks top upgrades from the basic. Hence, this puts simple burgers in the affordable price point to that of other burger joints, such as Ordinary burgers, Fat burgers and Wolf burgers.

Pork burger
Tiny pork burger.

Having said that, their premium selections costs upwards of $20 a meal, putting the price point in the likes of Fat boys or Hans im gluck at Vivocity, especially if you pair your meal with a fries or a milkshake upgrade add-on. Interestingly, on the other end of the spectrum, their vegetarian burgers are strangely the cheapest at $5 a pop.

It is recommended to pair your burger to a meal at $1.50, which comes with fries and a drink
It is recommended to pair your burger to a meal at $1.50, which comes with fries and a drink.

Additionally, your meal as a set at $1.50 extra comes with a fries and a standard lemon drink. You have the option to upgrade to a milkshake for a payable extra ($4.50 tops). Their milkshakes are not too bad, but not as thick as I expected them to be. Also, they are served in rather small cups of one size.

Drinks, lemonade and milkshakes which comes with your meal
Drinks, lemonade and milkshakes which comes with your meal.

Also simple in taste

Moreover, their burgers simply put are tad bland. I found they are more sandwich masquerading or assembled as a burger. It is more “sub” as in subway sandwiches with the ability to pick and choose your vegetables. Or course, if you could going for all of them, including olives is tad a no-brainer. Also, you get melted cheese fused into your beef patties. The rest of it depends on how you had configured your burger when ordering.

Your burgers are tad loaded. Tad like a Subway sandwich in burger form
Your burgers are tad loaded, especially with all the veges. Tad like a Subway sandwich in burger form.

Burgers ought to be better if they come with more sauce. Their burger are quite tasteless, lest when loaded with vegetable toppings and served with additional sachets of chili sauce for your fries, or for your burgers if you so wish. Moreover, with all the toppings, your burgers do exhibit quite tad of a subway sandwich syndrome. It is loaded and overflowing with generous servings of vegetables.

Quick burgers

Additionally, your burgers are made to order and comes out pretty quickly. 4 burgers in my visit took about 15 minutes to be served with our drinks coming out first.

Your burgers comes out pretty quickly
Your burgers comes out pretty quickly.

Additionally, a thing worth mentioning is that during the Covid-19 circuit breaker period, you order your meal via a QR code unique to your table. Here, you can check out on the spot using various payment means, like Visa Paywave.

Their curly fries are not bad, the next best up side behind regular fries
Their curly fries are not bad, the next best up side behind regular fries.

However, I found their burgers are tad dry, and has a very light dressing of sauce. Notably, the only sauces available are regular ketchup or chili sauce which is meant to go with your fries sides. Speaking of sides, I would recommend you to stick to their regular or curly fries, which is more hearty than the rosti.

Do avoid the rosti, and choose the fries instead
Do avoid the rosti, and choose the fries instead.

Furthermore, you can top up your burger to go with a drink and a side of fries for $4 addition. This can save you about a dollar tops to purchasing them separately. Also, their milkshakes are not bad though the portions are tad small, but at $3.50 to $4.50 a cup, I am not complaining.

All in all, I would recommend Simple Burgers if you wish to have a quick simple no-frills burger with rather fast service. Their burger prices are not as affordable as I thought it to be. For the small burger sizes, I was expecting it to be cheaper. Still Simple Burgers is a rather good addition in the rather already crowded Singapore gourmet burger segment.

Jurassic world cafe is a themed novelty café restaurant establishment located at Orchard Ion Sky. Yes, that Ion which sits on top of Orchard MRT station. Additionally, the establishment is a tucked on the upper 55th floor. You access the ion sky area via an express elevator from the mall’s level 4 concierge service counter. Notably, there was an art exhibition at the mall entrance, which you can browse on your way in.

Moreover, given the current COVID-19 restrictions, entry to the restaurant is limited on a booking-basis, where you can reserve your slot in 30 minute blocks from the restaurants’ opening hours from 11am to 10pm daily. Also, with the December school holidays in full force, expect the restaurant to be jammed-packed with family and kids.

Ion Sky Great views

There is plenty to see up here from the 56th floor of the Ion building. Such as the CBD and eastern Singapore on this side.

At the top, you circle around a carpeted walkway which encircles the restaurant, with full panoramic city views of the southern and western sides of Singapore. Ion sky is pretty much towers over all the buildings along Orchard road, with Tang Marriott hotel itself looking minute from above.

Furthermore, the theming of the Jurassic world restaurant is at best mediocre. The rather small, but otherwise well-spaced restaurant is lined with large leafy ferns mimicking Jurassic-era foliage, with one or two dinosaur statues like a Velociraptor by the entrance.

Also, the wall feature LED screens which only displays static images of Scenic dinosaur views like viewing them from an enclosure. It’s quite a bummer. The concept tad reminds me of the temporary fad-driven Japanese anime themed cafes you can find in Tokyo Akihabara we explored earlier this year.

Moreover, Jurassic world menu at its core is a Singaporean Fusion one. The establishment menu options are simple with a mix of local and western flairs. You place your order and pay right at the restaurants entrance before being seated.

I would recommend their Jurassic World Burger ($28). It is one of their best offerings- a beef cheeseburger sandwiched between charcoal buns. Also, the patties are juicy though the burger itself tad dry and better with more sauce. Your burger comes with potato wedges as sides.

Furthermore, I found other dishes like the Nasi Lemak and Volcano curry rice ($23) tad bit too bland for the offerings. Though. The curry is a mildly spicy and great if you demand a more Asian flair and want something more unique than plain Nasi-lemak ($20).

Moreover, there are also Battered Fish & Chips ($24), which you can order out of the menu and is available on their online menus. Additionally, going with the Christmas theme during my visit, is a choice dish of Christmas meat platter comprising of roast pork ribs, and chicken. Also, kids Menu items includes (Mac & Cheese) $18, and potato sides such as Curly Fries $14 and fried Tater Tots (hashbrowns) going for $14 a pot.

Desserts and drinks- not as dinotastic

I would recommend their interesting themed desserts, such as their Lava flow cake ($16). It is essentially a lava cake. It is a nice touch which goes well with the Dino theme. Also, the Lava flow cake as a good sweet dessert to top up your meal.

Jurassic World Cafe Ion Sky Lava Flow dessert ($16), a Lava cake with salted egg yolk fillings

Moreover, like a lava cake you can see the bright salted egg yolk “Lava flow” from within. Also, the Fossil Excavation Cake ($16) is what I like to call and “activity meal” which turns the phrase “don’t play with your food” over it head. Also, it beckons you to dust out the frosting of your dessert cake like Archaeological diggers.

Jurassic World Cafe Ion Sky lava, um, egg yolk viscous flow
Lava, um, egg yolk viscous flow.

Stay away from the drinks

Also available to go with your main courses are a selection of novelty drinks and desserts. But I find it hard pressed to recommend them considering they do cost ridiculously expensive. $9 for a cup of Milo or $8 for a Mosasaurus (regular) soda anyone?

You get limited Christmas themed post cards with comes with select dishes like the Roast and Curry rice
You get limited Christmas themed post cards with comes with select dishes like the Roast and Curry rice.

Hence, if there is one thing I would not recommend here are the drinks. I found the drinks more to be a novelty item which serves more to amuse kids. Also, your drink is coloured, plain themed with small cardboard dinosaur cut-outs, but does not come with any smoking volcano contraptions- something you did expect for a drink costing as much as a lunch main.

Additionally, more affordable options includes hot drinks, such as Latte, Cappuccino and Mocha at a more Starbuck-priced range of $6-6.50 per pop. Iced Latte sets you back $7. Totalling up, a meal for about 2-3 persons without drinks could set you back just over the sub-$100 range.

Moreover, the restaurant has a small Toy section at it’s entrance. It comprises of a mix of Hasbro official merchandise as well as a curated selection of Lego sets themed from the last movie. Also, the establishment touts to offer a limited section of special toys, such as Mattel’s Snap Squad and Jurassic World-themed dinosaur Lego sets.

All in all, dining at Jurassic world is a mixed experience. If you are a Jurassic World fan and want a place to amuse the kids, I would strongly recommend a visit.

Jurassic world cafe is a no-brainer for dino die-hard fans who can’t get enough of the franchise. Otherwise, I would recommend to shortlist the Jurassic World Cafe just for the novelty.

The dishes and theming is at best what you can find for Jurassic world offerings you can get in Singapore for now. Though you might be disappointed to find anything too out of the ordinary here. Their food quality is good, but offered at a premium too. For the rest of us, I would recommend to shortlist the Jurassic World Cafe.

BaseUS Big Ears wireless car charger unbox and review

0

Today, let’s take alook at the BaseUS wireless car charger with an unboxing, first impressions and functional test of the car accessory product. BaseUS is a Chinese-branded equipment brand manufacturer. They are Shenzhen based consumer electronic brand producing products under their own BaseUS Technology brand, like the product we are looking at here.

Lets check out the BaseUS wireless inductive car charger
Lets check out the BaseUS wireless inductive car charger.

Furthermore, the product goes by the “Big ears” charger. Though the 10W charger does not the highest wireless charging output that we see on the market today (which can go upwards of 15W), but it is one of the few purpose in-built with a car mount. It is quite reasonably priced too, I bought this unit at $28 SGD shipped from online merchants. Notably I found this charger selling at $49 from brick and mortar stores in Sim Lim Square.

What’s in the box

In the box, you get the basic essentials. The charger comes with a simple set of instructions and warranty information, as well as some rear aligning cards to stick your adhesive pad onto the back of your phone. Also included as a bonus is a 12v cigarette lighter charger which outputs 10w via a single USB out port. Check out more with an unboxing video and first impression video below.

Exterior outlook

The charger unit is simple. It is clad is black with a mixed of plastic body on the charger unit and a sturdy solid metal stand on the base. These two pieces are attached via a stainless steel socketed ball joint which is rather tough to rotate.

BaseUS wireless inductive car charger unit consist of a central coil and a magnetic ring surround
The charger unit consist of a central coil and a magnetic ring surround.

The stiff ball joint does hold your phone pretty snugly in place, so it does not move when driving. Your phone is secured onto charger unit by magnets hidden in the charger plate.

The central ball joint connecting the mounting base and the charger coil.

Furthermore, you get a faux leather adhesive pad which adheres onto the back of your phone via pre-applied 3M double-sided tape. Also, in default mode, the charger comes with a double-sided 3M adhesive which you can stick to your dashboard. This base unit can be screwed off to reveal an air-vent clip which you can stick to your car non-destructively.

Screwing out the base mount reveals an air-con vent clip

Functional tests

Also, the charger unit is circular which has a magnetic material placed on its outer rim. This holds your phone in place which mated to the included phone backing pad. Also, the center plastic area is where the inductive charger is located. It is surrounded by a magnetic outer ring which holds your phone in place.

The charger unit glows blue at the center on standby mode
The charger unit glows blue at the center on standby mode.

Moreover, at its core, the 10W charger kicks out charge at two operating voltages at 5v at 2 Amps or 9v and 1.67 Amps. This is depending on the device type it detects using the Qi wireless charging standard. Also, the charger has a blue LED indicator standby light showing that it is powered-on.

On my tests, the charger is based on a universal wireless charging format probably based on wireless Qi2 (version 1.2) of 10 watts out. Still, a slow charge has benefits to battery longevity. Furthermore, your charging pad connects via an included Micro-USB to USB type-A cable. This was tad odd considering USB-C is mainstream now.

Backward compatible with older wireless devices

Additionally, it was able to charge older Qi version 1 phones such as a Samsung Note 3 with a third party inductive pad add-on, as well as the more modern phones I managed to test in hand with the iPhone X and Samsung S20. However, charging time is not the fastest, it takes on average half the amount of time (about 3.5 hrs for a full charge) to charge from a cable routed to the phone instead of the wireless charger.

Wireless charging is fairly straightforward simply plug and play
Wireless charging is fairly straightforward simply plug and play.

Still, slower wireless charging has more benefits to battery longevity. On real-world use, I was able to get a net positive charge rate through the charger with Waze navigation app on my phone and the screen constantly-on during a drive with navigation. But charging was slow, at a rate similar to running it off a 1 Amp wired charger, it is no-where near fast charge, and you are better off plugging in your phone directly via a USB-C cable if you need juice urgently.

Discreet and not intrusive
Discreet and not intrusive.

However, that’s what you get with wireless charging. In all, you do have the flexibility of not having to deal with the hassle of cables and plugging in your phone physically with a cable when getting into your vehicle. Setting up the charger is simple, simply plug it in your vent, or if you prefer something tad more permanent have it stuck on your dashboard via the included 3M heavy-duty mounting tape.

All in all, it is hard to fault the BaseUS Big Ears wireless car charger. It has little flaws to begin with, couple with a simple and sturdy design. I would recommend the wireless car charger on the basis that it is one of the few such car products out there by a reputable brand, and at a rather reasonable price too.
