20 Traffic Police Driving Test Tips and Hints

9
Pass your driving test with these tips!

Golden rules for learner drivers taking the traffic police test.

Taking a driving test can be an unnerving experience, here are 20 tips I share from my own experience as a learner driver myself. These tips are updated for the 2017 season.

1

Understand your test vehicle.
Try to make the warmups before the test, its crucial if you are using a different car every time in your training. Get to know the accelerator pedal responsiveness/deadzones. The clutch biting point and the brake points deadzones/responsiveness.

A “deadzone” is a small starting range on the foot pedal or steering wheel where any movement won’t bring about any effect. It can also known as a “freezone”.

2

Relax.
Nothing worst than having to potentially go against yourself. Staying calm will allow you to remember steps and procedures better, so you won’t mess up- critical in the circuit stage. Keep a mental model of the route and task ahead to maintain focus and not let your mind wander from worry.

3

Know your test routes.
Roughly know the circuit and test routes. Even when you are not supposed to learn and memorize it in detail, it helps to prepare you for your next move/turn if your tester fails/is late in giving you directional prompts. Most importantly it gives you the overall confidence to drive.

4

Make habits work for you.
Like they always say- make it a habit to turn your head to check blind spots. But really do the check! and not only going through the motion. Moreover you will come to a point where blind point checking will become a second nature to you – you will notice yourself turning your head every time you drive when doing a lane change or turn, in extreme cases even as a passenger or riding on the bus!

5

Echo like a parrot.
Always respond verbally or “echo” (parrot repeat) towards the tester’s commands on test routes, adds to a better overall impression, shows driver attentiveness and tells the tester that he/she is not talking to a wall!

6

Yield to pushy drivers.
Don’t forget, you are sharing the road with other road users in your test. If there is another particular vehicle who is driving aggressively/fast, always let them pass before lane changing to right fast lanes (i.e right turn/ u-turn). Though you have the right of way, you are always on a losing end if things gets messed up in a test.

7

Be wary of public transport vehicles.
Always beware of public transport- Taxis, Buses, Uber/Grab drivers (identified with the blue private hire car stickers on the top left rear windscreen) suddenly stopping or obstructing your path. They may have a schedule or a pushy customer on-board to entertain and might not be in their interest to give you a good time. Try not to follow behind one at all times, unless where the situation permits, as they might be unfamiliar with the environment and stop without notice.

8

Err on the side of caution.
Don’t rush. Its always better to wait if you feel unsafe to move off. Its better to be penalised for unnecessary waiting than failing the test straightaway by almost causing an accident. In the circuit, if you feel that you are gonna hit the kerb, don’t push it- Its better to reverse and make adjustments (no fault on first attempt, 2pts on additional adjustments) than mounting the kerb (fail).

9

Build a good first impression.
Don’t be intimidated by the tester, instead try to “befriend” him/her to break the ice. You can do so by engaging in small talk (e.g. how is your day? had your lunch? dinner?). Though some testers can really look and behave like a sore thumb. Don’t be disheartened either if the tester chooses to keep their distance. A good impression lasts and it brighten up the ride, adds to your confidence instead of a long gloomy ride to a retest later.

10

Ignore tester distractions.
Don’t be distracted by the tester, esp when he jolts down something on his checklist even you’ve done nothing wrong, keep concentrating on the road, those may be distraction tools.

11

Driving slow is a hazard!
Don’t drive too slow (a misconception of a safe driver), instead drive close but below the speed limit so you won’t be much of a hazard on the road. There is in fact a penalty for driving slower than what the road conditions allow, but don’t be too happy on the right foot either. On manual, you will almost never need to go up to 5th gear unless your route have a very long road straight. Don’t get carried away and do remember your speed limit too.

12

More hill acceleration is better.
When moving off/slope its always OK to accelerate/give gas more than usual and make an engine din (no test fault penalties) than stalling, rolling back down a hill or causing an obstruction (potential fail).

13

Smooth-braking adds brownie points.
When you stop a car just using the foot brake, it will produce a “jerk back” when the car stops completely. To make your stops less jerky, release the brake pedal slightly just when the car is coming to the end of a complete stop, this will cause the car to inch forward very slightly in compensation for the suspension “jerk back”. If done well, you can remove the “jerk back” completely, gliding to a standstill- perfect for occupant comfort.

14

Take cues from other junction lights.
When waiting at a red light to turn green, anticipate traffic light changes by looking at the light states at other parts of the junctions (e.g. pedestrian side blinking or turning red on your lane) so you know that the light will soon turn green in your lane. This is so as not to get caught off-guard/giving an impression of a “blur sotong” or delay movement when the light is already green in your favor. You are not expected to zoom off once the lights turn green, but at least it makes you are aware of the light conditions in the junction itself.

15

The green light is more deadly than red.
Unlike waiting for a red light to turn green, approaching a green lit junction is the most unpredictable as it can get. Always cover the foot brake when approaching the junction and switch to the accelerator if you come within the “no stop/point of no return” zone (about 1 car length) before the stop line. Doing so allows you to clear the white line and the junction while still amber (legal). Still proceed with caution!

16

Know junctions with right-turn green arrows.
For each route, it is good to know the junctions that feature right turns with “right turn green arrows”. This gives you the right of way in a junction and prevents sudden stops or “E-brakes” in junctions when you suddenly see an approaching car in the opposite traffic flow, which won’t ride well with your tester. Also, keep in mind that with the “right turn green arrow” can function independently and be of a different light colour from the main traffic light- i.e you can actually make the right turn with a green arrow despite a red light for going straight.

17

Showcase your attention to detail
The test is a show of application of what you’ve learnt in driving school. You had spent countless hours on the circuits and roads, showcase it to the tester! i.e slowing the car down using both engine and foot brake (manual) before junction/zebra crossing/before turns, etc. Taking note of such details even a normal average licensed driver cares less about will give your tester a good impression.

18

Don’t clutch-in before the E-brake.
In an E-brake test, only clutch in when your feet had been transferred onto the brake pedal, then hit both pedals hard, NEVER hit the clutch before the brake (wrong technique, you will feel a sudden free-gliding feeling before the stop), or the clutch too late after the brake (stall). When done correctly, the car should produce a mechanical klung-klung-klung (manual) during the sudden stop without the engine stalling.

19

Avoid peak periods.
Choose test dates and time which don’t clash with peak traffic, school dismissal timings, Friday Muslim prayers, increasing the chances of a less packed road & pedestrian situation.

20

Persevere.
Lastly, if you fail try again! don’t be dishearted by failure, book another test date and practice more. A fact is that your chances of passing increases with each try, testers usually do not favor first time passes.

Extra Tip for repeat students: If you’ve failed many tests before, to the extent of having to renew another PDL, attach the old PDL behind the new one altogether. Though serving no actual purpose, the records of your previous tests behind your old PDL tells and indicates to the tester alot of your past ordeal and driving experience. They won’t miss it as they have to flip it to record the test behind your new PDL. Provided you do not have any major mistakes in the test, this might actually increase your chances of passing especially to those testers who pass people based on a longer driving experience and not on first attempt testees.

250GB of dunkin’ space

Managed to slipstream my winXP OEM together with MS service pack 2 in the morning. Now I have a complete new bootable winXP CD-Rom I can install in my computer anytime I reformat with all the latest updates inside… & the best thing is, its all completely legal! Read more on creating one here.

One of the main reasons to slipstream is that Service pack 2 (or previosuly, 1a & unlike the first release of Winxp) do support harddrives above 137GB in size. Even if your motherboard do support large large (like in my case) the 1st generation winXP do not & you can only format partitions 137GBs in size. This is however, corrected since SP1a. Now I am happily formating a full 250GB partition on my new drive.. on my personal comp (yea!).

Just can’t wait for win longhorn to come out… rumored next year maybe…

Fahrenheit 381

3

I am now typing this post on my family computer, as my personal one is under maintenance, will get back to it later. On a recap for the day:

The day began quite slowly, but otherwise quite painful as I didn’t really get a good sleep the previous night. Furthermore its the day of my traffic police test. Whats worst than waking up with a 38.1 fever on the day of your driving test… & thought it could get that bad. On a sidetrack, I was actually not feeling well for a few days with a cough & sore throat which cleared by midmweek but a flu & cold followed suit thereafter, & I thought that off-the-shelf-medicine at home, lots of water * rest would be me recovered by today..but I was wrong.

What I saw was the need to get out of home- I needed time out. Then theres lunch with mum at the newly opened Hans restaurant just near my home at the old HDB building, had horfun as I couldn’t think of anything for desirable to eat with a fever.

Left around 12noon where mum went to do some grocery shopping at NTUC while I took 197 to jurong, where I later caught a cab to BBDC (I was lazy). Strangely, I wasn’t nervous, but otherwise angry with myself for failing the test so many times, & dang, I have to wait so long for this day, yet I am in no good condition to drive… lucky me..

Then theres the usual warm up which served no other purpose but allowed me more of less to preview the traffic condition around me. Did not bad, I say the funny thing is that once I am in the car geared up & ready I felt “OK” as in my flu would suddenly clear & my body won’t feel that warm, its a weird feeling but something I am not complaining about! My tester of the day was Mr soon or so, tat was around 2.45pm when the test started, at 3.45pm I was alone at the video briefing for graduates… Yes I PASSED!

Recapping what happened the reason why I failed my last 2 test was bulk penalization on the road driving part of the test, not much on the circuit. But this time road was twice as better than my circut- my parking didn’t’ do very well, & I have to readjust to vertical again, & hail! I was greeted by tons of red lights while on the road! (yea no more dangerous green lights) I was a safe driver & presto a pass with 14 points! Brought myself a p-plate (finally) close my driving account & drew out my remaining cash in the account.

Treated myself to a 250GB harddrive at simlim thereafter. & went to do some price research around the area, collecting pricelists. Got myself a new 2.5mm- 3.5mm stereo audio plug for my sl45 as my current one is spolit. Met Jason on the 197 bus on my way home. Funny I said I was sick right? haha went back to install my new HD only to find out I can’ get the full 250Gb drive capacity from the restrictions winXP ave on drives 137GB & above. Would be Slipstreaming SP2 with my current winXp disc to install my my personal comp tomorrow, in the mean time its a pile of useless unbootable metal.

Dinner was a AV, a coffeeshop restaurant “zee cha” style. Noting my fever & my flu, my parents advised me to go & see a Doctor which I succumbed to after persistent persuasion, I am not a guy who likes to see a doctor over any other problem, I just don’t see it necessary, but I think that would change… after coming out of Alexandra hospital, with free medicine (cos am civil servant dude) I am having second thoughts!

& here I am typing this post, after bathing & so, gonna sleep soon. Depending on my condition tomorrow hopefully I would be able to carry on with plans for outs with my cousin tomorrow, whom he is so anticipative of the meeting tomorrow. Furthermore I am also booked on sun with my BMT mates for afternoon outs again.. would be looking forward to it, I wish I don’t have to call them off because of my… danged fever?

Am I ready for driving?

0

Came down with a slight fever 😕 this evening, its just a light one I think, it it was not that bad. Just a very warm feeling & a sore throat, very typical-lish fever feel. I think I should get out once in a while today, instead of staying in the whole day in front of the computer at home, very bad.. bad bad bad. & hey wondering why am I at home? because I am clearing my work off given by my OC & yea.. you may think so much for the off today, being all down sick 😳 … come to think spyware not only affects computers….

Downed 2 pandols, would have an early night, hopefully I would be better tomorrow…. the day of my driving test.. 😯 oh man why do it have to be like that? I just feel that I am not physically well to take it, but after waiting almost 3 months for this danged long retest, I have no other alternative.. oh well. wish me luck tomorrow then.

Living by the ad/spy/shitware…

0

Its amazing how great spyware can turn the best of computers down to nothing but a heap of pop-ups, intrusions, browser hijacks & not to mention lots of headaches with unexplained hangs, unresponsiveness, even on the NTFS & win XP platform! Personally I don’t think my hardware is that old. But what this really taught me again is the power of software. Just say even with the best biggest rig you can build (or say the baddest guns you can mount on a machine/mech for analogy instance) its as useless if the OS is screwed with viruses, adware, spyware & unnecessary shit. & yes even if adware do help on some occasions, most of the time it just as a treatment & not a cure to the problem, yes the wares do come back.

I am one well versed with internet security & won’t turn to temptations such as downloading suspicious executable or open an e-mail saying “you’ve won a million dollars, run this program to find out!” But I don’t my other family members are, considering I am not the only one using this workstation, they must have let all these malicious wares, Trojans in, despite my twin firewall defense. Despite all this bitching I guess this is an excuse for a computer clean format & upgrade too, after backing up all my stuffs. The lag is partly due to my almost full 80GB harddrive which I would be upgrading to a 250GB one of I pass my driving tomorrow (yea, I MUST pass on this 3rd attempt). Then that would be a treat to me!

Lastly PS, to all adware & spyware makers out there: your works impress me, & they sure have done what they are programmed to do. But what I can say is to get your f**king buttheads out off your puny little ass world there & get down to doing something more productive & meaning full to society.

Start of October

2

Booking out on friday would be a first & too, a very much welcomed thing for the company. Considering the implementation of the 5 day work work week by our prime minister. Its october & the transistion from sept to oct is very much a welcome, the specialists in the wing would be all one year bikers already (though we don’t really get to actually ride ’em) not to mention the lack of even having our own bikes considering that the scout platoon is already operational.

The week ended with a 2 day wing-internal exercise, learnt quite alot of stuff in HQ, namely boards, intel, singals, maps, very much the usual stuffs. Funny though, as I was once in an active recce team. With me leaving team07 & such it seems that the team is kinda “going under” & branded as a “lousier team”. This is so as the feeling was, well.. as reflected by the HQ personnel & the quality of their reports. Team 07 was once the best tactical team till it literally fell apart due to reshuffling issues. Come to think about it, T07 was once commanded by John & me, now sides are switched with James & Michael by PC, for the HQ side. HQ work, though comparatively more relaxed in looks, but just as though as going out in the field itself, something which many teams envy but what they fail to see is the lack of freedom outfield offers. Part II of outfield starts straight next week, so I guess that about it. Would be booking out on thursday to clear some old AOH off-in lieu.

Onto some old matters, we didn’t win the AHM waterpoint competition, as told by our Angchek some supply-eng side got the win, & theres no runner ups or so.. so dang.. but on a brighter side, our wing OC offered me & john a day off for the impressive effort & “original ideas’ as so he claims. Would be looking forward for a good day to claim it then.

Finally get to continue working on my commanche model lying around my room for months now, added mostly details & painting, I would go for a nice desert variation look. Hope to get it done.. well soon! As so the day passed, did some surfing & hey came about Dreamwork’s pictures new animation movie site. Starring Robert De Niro, Will Smith, Angelina Jolie & many more stars on the coming movie, Sharks Tale.

Before ending this post, check out this variation of the Geforce FX6800 by XFX, spotting the very usual “XFX box”, neato! 😀

Replacement strings

0

Just when I started tuning my guitar today & before I could get any tunes up on my favorite Good Charlotte song, my e string of my guitar broke.. 😯 argh!!

Dang I don’t have a spare anywhere, shouldda go easy on it. considering its the thinest string… but I think its time for a string change anyway. And there it was standing broken & unable to play a song.. though I could always do alway with the highs.. but arghh! disaster!

Then hope came, my parents planned dinner out so maybe I can drop by somewhere.. where I can get replacement strings fast.. & hey there I was next at parklane shopping mall, opposite peace centre.. the mini music heaven… got my strings changed at my favorite Parklane music novelty store at the basement. The old uncle there is always very kind, never fail to have to good chat & usually gives good discounts for stuffs there, you should check out his music store, I reco that with quite a selection of accessories guitars & amps.

However, I had never changed strings at that store before. Furthermore my guitar spots a Floyd Rose Tremolo system so I would like to heck the hassles of changing strings myself. So I asked whether he provides the service, “sure, no problem, that would be $2 per string, $10 for all 6” he replies… ok reasonable.. but next I was kinda “dumbfounded” when he took out his modified power drill attached to a de-tuner winder attachment to unwind the strings & put on the new ones, quite hardcore but otherwise, very impressive, & I thought we peeps were limited to those “relatively good” manual tuner winders… but a drill attachment? whoa! But it gets the job done very professionally & in record time too, plus tuning… well at least now I know a good place for strings replacement service!

Had dinner at rex resturant, opposite the sunshine plaza, they didn’t have much food left as its near closing, so we only had chicken rice with veg, still hungry we left for paradigm center back across the road where I had a foot long subway meal while mum & dad had their complete dinner at the center’s foodcourt. Tuned the guitar the moment I got home, & just in time for my ATW, camp mate, wong to meet on mirc (though I was 1/2hr late) to transfer the AHM photos he took on his camera. Would be uploading them up soon.. the pics should be up tml then. 🙂

AHM

0

Dang I am so awake now, just woke up from 2x 10hrs sleep blocks fromt he last 48hrs. Oh well, since I am very much up myself… lets just recap some happenings yesterday.

Literally slept the whole morning-afternoon when I came back from AHM yesterday. Its a joint run together with the sheares bridge run held in the morning. Had only 1 1/2 hours of sleep the night before where we set up the waterpoints the moment we reached there saturday afternoon, only to start resting around 6pm then waiting till 1am where we can put up the overhead banners when the road closes. Set up a hammock between 2 coconut tress (no falling ones) & rested till 3am where we did finishing touches & most of the stores preps started when the ice supply truck arrived.

The run kicked off about 5.30am just in time when everything’s done. The first runner reached us around 6.15am- an African runner, all chasing the front LSV scout, they were literally sprinting- all 21km! Then came few of the relatively faster runners then the bulk of the 21km runners around 6.30am till 7am. Drink demand wasn’t so high then till about 7.30am. Most seriously competitive runners don’t drink, its only those leisure runners who drink lots- demand surged high around 7.45am & we can say that we were literally one & soaked with the Gatorade we were serving, given the frantic demands for it. Demand seem endless & theres even queues at our water point just the gatorade… dang. It was so bad I guess any longer, I guess my hands & the guys helping out at my waterpoint would have our hands “Gatorade” further (yes our hands were a yellow-oranage hue to it thereafter, due to the constant scoping/mixing/blending of Gatorade). Not to mention the danger of frost bites when where we have to mix the super chilled drinks at the peakl of demand. Litter was everywhere, & the road were very much a littered- green & white mess of paper & Styrofoam cups all tramped & meshed to a spread of green-white flakes being contrasted onto the road, a quite spectacular sight. Furthermore given the endless number of runners, we can’t even pick the litter off the road, they just keep coming, all 8000 of them! Thank goodness we had park cleaners who saved the day by helping us clean up after the event. No hesitation to offer them drinks for their service too.

We went out of Gatorade around 8.15am then & whats left were slightly yellow hued plain water with a very diluted Gatorade taste. Can’t help it! we were out… by around 8.30am all 4 waterpoints on our side were all serving ice water, which slowly turned to warm water when we start to run of of ice around 9am. At this time, mostly left are all the “sio gan” ones who literally only care about walking the whole 21km distance. We started packing up around 9.15am & loaded everything up our transport back to camp. it would be a 2 day off for us (mon & tues). Whew! thats all for the sunday. The results of the waterpoint competition are not up though, hope we would win!

Friday!

0

Before the day started, woke up at 6.15am halfdead, ate breakfast.. do normal morning stuffs.. blah blah, next thing there I was walking up to chonggen’s house after dad dropped me off for work. Kinda slept (rested) there for a while. Got his uncle to drive us to the venue for the day thereafter, its 8am then. & yea, the coffee CG’s maid served did wake my morning up alittle, really needed that morning caffine boost anyway.

Today is ATC aniversary day & celebrations were held at Safra Yishun country club where we had watergames, rockclimbing, shooting & langames free for all to play. Very much spent the time after the opening ceromontion with most of the specs in the arcade lanning & playing arcadegames. Completed time crisis II with only $2.50 spent for continues.. hehe. Even Tanyi & darryl brought their own bowling balls to bowl there. Had lunch there before leaving the place at around 12noon.

Went to Jason’s house which was in the area for some slack while Jason got him self ready to go go for more Langames with us, which we already planned. & so the group comprised of CG, Jason, Tanyi, Janan & me who kinda got to appreciate how its like to be packed like sardines in a car. Got to parklane where we had about 4 hours of lanning with 3 matches of C&C generals & battlefield vietam (we had enough of Counter-Strike & warcraft in the morning lan). Sunshine plaza was the next venue where we intro-ed Tanyi to the place. all he could say was wow… As for me, I finally got the Patlabor whole TV series DVD set. Can say that each esiposde costs a dollar, as there are about 100++ esp in all. Everyone left after that, around 7pm. Went back to Parklane’s music nolverty store where I got a new guitar cool tunner with a large LCD display with a good bargain for $31 from #35, I like the store uncle there, very homyly & friendly. Dropped down to the basement arcade for some time crisis III (stopped halfway) before meeting up with my parents who picked me up thereafter. Had dinner at Golden Mile steam boat restaurant before heading home.

Monday blues?

0

As the day passes with each going step, my driving test on the 8th next month draws closer too. Mmm, exciting… but I should be able to pass on this 3rd attempt. The 26th of this month, (which is this upcoming Sunday) is the army half Marathon day. I am am more of less in charge of the water point for my regiment, the project is finishing & is on schedule since 2 july, should go on well.

My computer is getting kinda corky & slow now, can’t wait to reformat my harddrive, but thats after I backup some stuff that is…

Some plans for next month: Get a New Harddrive, a new 256MB graphics card (maybe). Then I can finally throw my dinky old geforce 4 Ti4600 in my living room PC in place of it.

Hopefully my marksman pay will come in next month, then that would be a much welcomed spending boost!

On music, just download the Guitar Tabs for Good Charlotte, maybe I should start practising this rather good old song soon.

On the week to come, the prospects of nights of on wednesday may be quite high, so you can see me back on the light or so. Otherwise, this week would be the forst week my unit would be experiencing the 5 day week thingy, yes I would be booking out on friday evening that is. 😉
