The Rotaract & Leo Club Treasure Hunt

0
Spit Ball Challenge

That’s a cardboard dart board in case your were wondering. There’s was a 3 day orientation camp in SP since last Friday comprising of juniors from The Rotaract and Leo Club, ending on the third and last day (today) with a city-wide treasure hunt. Peili called me to help out as a station master pair for today’s event which actually came rather obliging as I actually couldn’t not make down to the whole camp itself due to my schedule.

My station is suited at Far East Plaza, with seven more located a few key landmarks around Singapore, namely the Arts Museum, Esplanade, Fort Caning, just to name a few. Our station has a challenge involving blowing spit balls from a straw onto a dart board with rings demarcated with 5 point intervals, where a score of 100 is required to process with the next given clue. Teams will then allowed to leave after they had cracked the riddle to the next destination and everybody hydrated with ice-cold water (safety measure as some teams actually ran from fort canning all the way here to far east).

The ice-cold water was provided courtesy of the very kind staff of Burger King Far East Plaza who always happily filled up our 1.5L PET bottle for free everytime we approached them, totaling almost 8 times for all our teams. Teams generally come at 30min blocks during the 9am- 3pm event, but was dampened by the rain causing few delays, but nevertheless everything went smoothly.

We actually had quite some free time between groups, saw that coming with some of my homework and my laptop there to finish some chores of my own, besides finding out what I’ve missed during the camp. Learnt about their adventures over the past few days, namely their ice-breaking sessions, cheers and especially the night walk where Peili have to go around campus as a ghost to scare the juniors who made their tour around campus around a planned route in pairs, bizarre!

Farewell National Stadium, Mizuno Wave Creation 8

1

With the National Stadium planned for demolition this year, what the least we can do to commemorate this old iconic landmark but to give it a visit and proper farewell before it comes under the destruction of the construction shovels. Met up with Meifang, Huida and Youboon at Kallang. The sports museum was closed when we were there, but that didn’t stop us from exploring the far reaches of the stadium itself, the grandstand and field. The track was in quite a very bad condition (no wonder no one goes there to workout anymore besides the fitness gym), coupled with the hot Saturday sun, it simply just melted under our shoes, in a way having us bringing back part of the stadium in the form of melted track material under our soles!

Next on the plan was towards Velocity at Novena Square for shoe shopping, where Derek our FootDoc could land us up to 40% off on Asics, Mizuno, New Balance and Saucony Shoes. The new DS Trainer 12 does not really look as good as it’s predecessor, sporting a rather plain and conservative look available both in red (which everybody liked) and green (which I actually preferred). However, all eyes were set on the Mizuno Wave Creation 8, which has a higher profile than the DS Trainer, but something I would like to try having used Asics Shoes for almost 5 years.

The thing which really amazes me about the Mizuno Wave Creation 8 is it’s durability – 5% lost in effective cushioning after 500km as claimed by Men’s Health Singapore – perfect for long millage freaks like me. I will be able to get the Creation 8 at $139SGD courtesy of a fellow Track Friend (sorry folks this is internal I won’t be providing details on this). Normal bargain retail price is usually $160 from the recommended retail price of $229.

BYOPC lan party, Meetin Alec, Taiwan F5 Jet Crash

Company Late Night Lan Gaming Session
With some time I have before leaving to the national stadium this afternoon, let me just talk about some things which happened during the past week, particularly yesterday and leaving the stresses of FYP aside.

Yes, and 1 week in advance, my boss called me up asking whether I can make it for their Lan gaming session where we would play Counter-strike after office hours in the wee nights in the office. So yesterday was the night and after a long day at school, project group finalizations and a short gym session and 7km run, saw myself back at home with enough time to settle down for some homework and some chores before rushing out again.

Dinner with Alec

Guess what? Met my old Track and Field Ambassador Alec who unexpectedly popped by while I was having dinner at Bukit Merah hawker center. “Is this place taken?” I remembered replying enervatedly to that strangely familiar voice: “No it’s free”, looking up – Alec? Yes, it had been sometime since he dropped by for track & field training, even despite his ailing ankles, he never fails to make it down not only to support us for training but competitions previously, which were cut short by his current problems. From there, learnt that he was on a one day course at CMPB preparing him for the upcoming National Day Parade 1800-hotline which he would be manning soon and was on his way for dinner that evening where he met me. I was told that his mother recently passed away just recently, my sincere condolences going out to him. Nevertheless Alec is a very strong person, I really admire him and how strong and firm he stands facing everyday life and supporting himself, where most people would just crumble into oblivion.

Company CS session

Took a bus to my destination thereafter and despite how well I love the way SMRT bus drivers speed along the roads, looks like the evening rush hour just eats into everybody’s traveling time. Played Counter-strike on our dedicated server till like 11.30pm, it’s a typical bring you own PC Lan party covering new maps like de_simpsons, old cs_mansion etc, really brings back the good old CS clan competition days previously, which actually “contributed” to my ‘A’ levels grades.

Taiwan Jet crash
I remembered watching news while on the treadmill yesterday about the jet crash in Taiwan, later do I know that one of my colleague’s old secondary school friend was actually one of the causalities of the crash – who suffered major burns to his body when the F5 jet crashed into the store room which he was was in. The Straits Times unexpectedly called him up during our gaming session for details on the causality background, assuming him being “related as a friend”. In the end, we all wonder where to the papers actually get their contacts from considering that my colleague actually didn’t keep in contact with his friend for years. Won’t be surprised if they have all your school and class records, besides your personal information at any go, scary.

My 3 person project team

0

With all of the DME students already starting on their Final year project (FYP), my team on the DME CIE option will start ours next semester – it being a dedicated whole semester concentrating day-to-day on project work itself. My team of 4 was finalized, so was our intended project to build a compressed air-powered mini car in the light of Singapore’s Green Movement.

🙁 However, my Final Year project plans took a blow the last week, as one of my team members from Burma wanted out of the team (which we actually planned and finalised few months ago) to another because of a personal reason on his part. Not only us but even our teacher and supervisor in-charge was rather puzzled sudden and unexpected change and movement – considering that our “teammate” actually consulted the other team (which he wanted-in) and our teacher in-charge, all without my team’s knowledge.

😯 As the saying goes: “Betrayal is more painful than death” I will not tolerate any sweeping actions which compromises the team’s integrity and stability. As what he wanted, that ex-teammate left the team as he said he “desires” to be with another person, ahem… a guy on the other team (I am not making any assumptions here, but I will leave that to you), bringing my team’s total strength to 3, the smallest CIE team for a non-research based, major special project (SP) so far.

Well at least with this spade of incidents, this only made the rest of my team stronger in bonds as ultimately it’s the pure and combined effort of every single team member in which will make our project an ultimate success.

😎 Oh yes, what are we building now this FYP, it will be a 360 degree gaming motion simulator, will provide more details when the time comes!

Blood Donation weight loss solution

2
SP 07 Blood Donation Drive

I lost weight! aha 400 grams? If that is the capacity of the blood donation sachet. There’s a blood donation drive at SP today, today being the third and last day to catch the HSA before they carry on in their round island mobile donation drive (or you can pop by HSA @ outram anyday too). The donation area, situated in the Student Alumni Association third floor’s dance room which is rather packed, but otherwise still very fast moving.

The bulk of the donors are first timers, bearing a sticker stuck to their clothing similar to the “first time flyer” kinda indication. It’s my third for me, so no big feat. Knowing how the system and lines works, got through the queues quite a breeze together with my donor card and saw myself waiting to be poked after 15mins, a record so far for me.

Initially there’s a group like 4 of us classmates going to “donate blood” we talked it all over lunch all planned and ready, turned out 2 chickened out at the entrance leaving me and another classmate, who ended up didn’t donated either as they could not find his vein… duh so turned out I was the only one who got through a successful donation.

Currently it would be one donation every year, and it’s back to training and swim tomorrow.

Me and my Sleep Debt

1
Tried day in class

The week’s been very slow lately, with 0km of runs covered, lots of work/chores piling up, a packed weekend agenda all coupled with a large sleep debt. I simply just cannot get the hang of 8am classes, which I am always late for and takes up 4/5 of my school week.

But that didn’t stop me from “killin’ myself” by going for a 14.55km run this evening despite 5hours of sleep last night & a 8-5 timetable today. The funny thing is that I am very much more awake then what I was a moment ago…

Some interesting line ups for the week would be:

Tomorrow – SP Blood donation drive

  • Friday – Overnight CS gaming session with my colleagues
  • Saturday – Track & Field Farewell visit to National Stadium
  • Saturday – Track Marina Bay Steamboat/Mother’s Day celebration with Family
  • Sunday – Aid Rotaract Club Freshman Orientation Treasure Hunt at Orchard Road

I have to squeeze in another 7km of runs and a swim in the week to meet my weekly quota, also on top of finishing all my required tutorial work and freelance jobs planned for the week. Hey a person also have to relax right?

They had some kind of Microsoft mini carnival at the auditorium today, notably is the hold your vista contest, where anybody can participate by holding up a MS visual basic 2006 bible in one arm extended. The longest winning a copy of Microsoft Office 2007. They also have lucky draws to win an Xbox 360, non to mention CO2 booths selling PDA phones. Overall quite badly organized and rather amateurish as well haha. Pathetic… wonder how much those Gates minions are paid by the hour?

Nice 16.5km Jog this evening

0

Me jogs around my usual Tanglin route this evening with leftover birthday cake still jumping in my stomach, the feeling is very unreal, not to mention the rather mixed taste of blackforest-chum-gastric juices when you bleach… ekkk

Shouldn’t eat less than 1 hour before my runs…

Mmmm, read in the Straits Times today that the HDB blocks around my district has the priciest price tag in Singapore – 5mins to orchard and 10mins to the City as reported. Heheh yea… like real.

Dragon Gate Restaurant in Habourfornt

0

Today’s Dad’s Birthday! Celebrated the first part of his birthday with black forest cake in the morning after breakfast and before my trip to SP for you know! then back home in the late afternoon before heading to Dragon Gate Restaurant in Habourfornt for Al-la-carte buffet dinner. The food and menu have not changed much since my visit last year and the place is only like 20% filled on a Saturday night. Man! Window shopped round Vivo and showed Sheena around as she (strangely) had not been there before. They are known mainly for their Tim Sum Lunch Buffets and very affordable al-la-carte buffet in the evenings. The food quality, though not top notch is fair for the price paid. You also get a large selection of Chinese dishes, ranging from meats, vegetables, noodles and soups to satisfy your palette.

Vivo City Shopping Thereafter
Vivo City Shopping Thereafter

At least now I can finalise why orchard road is getting quieter and quieter everyday, not only because of heartland malls but establishments like Vivo as well – it’s still very crowded there. The upper 3rd floor is still a very nice cool chill out place, with loads of darkness and group gatherings there, not to mention make-up places. With no closure and free access no wonder people like to “thon” there overnight.

My FYP lecturer called me up yesterday telling me about an industry school project requiring a team to build a motion simulator for plane/road vehicles. Sounds cool contrary to the previous Air engine go-kart we wanted to build previously. A simulator means a need for a screen and hydraulic system – not cheap stuffs. Unless we can savage a projection system from school, a 42″ plasma screen costs $1999 – the cheapest I found so far in the papers today and $2399 in Vivocity Best Denki and I guess that is all our budget can cater for! Looks like I have to source direct from distro already…

Some Soccer!

0

Choices today: Go watch Spiderman-3 with cousin, go for a relaxing swim and tan by the pool (as the sun is so freakin’ invitingly hot today), go to campus for junior’s orientation & street soccer or stay at home to finish up another few more tutorials to last me till mid-semester.

Afternoon Street Soccer

Though I am not totally the best of shape, went for the soccer instead. Bagging 2 feet blisters on top of 1 goal & 2 assists for my team on the quick 2 goal/match eliminations we played. No credit for goalkeeping though which I sux greatly at, but one of our freshies who played is quite good at it, something I guess weiwen, alvin and me could learn or two. Lunch was on our own pockets in FC 3 contrary to food catering previously. They had blended Kiwi juice on the specials going for $1 at the drink store – great value! Basketball was on next, but left after lunch. Met Guetping and Yiying on my way out who came in for 2pm track training. Heard that the rest carried on with Bball till like 5pm? So no training?

3rd Week of Semester, Bus-fying

0
SBS Volvo B9TL

I was late and had to make a choice between 2 bus services arriving together at the stop today (service 14 and 147, both superbuses which I can take to campus). Though 14 has a shorter traveling time, the 8am peak traffic at the AYE always slows things down considerably. The service 147 thou, spots the newer Volvo B9TL series, which also plys an alternative route to campus with an additional but justifiable traveling time of about 1 min, which is also the main reason why I took it.

Service 14 left ahead of mine, later do I know that bus service which I had been following for the next 3 bustops suddenly stalled in the middle of the road… then it’s hazard lights came on. BreakDown! wooo! You could just feel confusion and puzzled-ness painted on the morning rush-hour commuters faces as my bus passed theirs. Lucky me, cus I could actually be in that bus!

Thursday morning classes are exceptional strict in attendance, particular Lab practicals where any additional minute of lateness will mean 1% deducted your personal Laboratory report score, the maximum being 30% off where attendance will be marked as absent. All these are courtesy of the tutor who tracks every student’s entry into class with a time stamp. I was thankful and early, in fact by 10mins for an 8am class, arriving even before my tutor. Maybe he should give an inventive for those who make an effort to come early right? so that’s an additional 10% score for me? (or you can come 100mins early and get 100% of 1% of your report)… Fat hope I guess.

It’s week 3 and I had already completed enough tutorials in advance to last me till week 5-6, should keep me free from homework for a while. Good luck to those in Uni mugging for Semester exams coming very soon!

Mum ain’t trading these 2 days because of Tokyo holidays, should be dropping by and meeting her at Raffles City tomorrow to buy a birthday cake for Dad’s Birthday on Saturday, wonder which favor will I, ummm he would like?
