Today, let’s take a dine on at NBCB burgers, also known as NBCB Nothing But Cheese Burger (NBCB), a new hip burger joint in Orchard Central in Somerset.
Located on the 4th floor of the mall. The dining area comprise of seating within the store grounds and exterior seating by a common walkway. NBCB does offer a reasonable amount of seating space, and I didn’t had to wait long to find a table even on peak weekends. Notably, the establishment is situated near the mall’s now defunct indoor rock-climbing wall attraction, once touted as the world’s highest.
You place and pay for your order before being seated, where numbered queue system prompting you to collect your burgers when done. Credit cards including Fave pay are accepted. Notably, you can get additional value on fave pay, who were doing a $45 for $50 voucher offer with NBCB during my visit.
NBCB Burger selection
On the menu are a range of burgers in the sub $12-13 price range. Their menu options are simple with 5 funky burger names to choose from abbreviated in short form. For instance, their Cheeseburger is NBCB ($11.90), Double beef at DCB ($15.90), Chicken CCE ($8.90) is one of their cheapest options, Prawn going Haha ($10.90) and Hey Hey for their prawn burger ($12.90). So it is not just cheese burgers (NJCB).
Of course, their trademark menu item is their NBCB burger, a cheeseburger, a staple here at NBCB. Also you have the option to upsize your single burger into a meal by topping up $4.
This pairs your burger with a side of straight cut fries and a drink (canned or bottled). Also, you have the options to top up your fries with additional sauces. These start from a $1 extra top up. Interestingly, the sauce are served in refrigerated plastic dip cups, not the nicest in culinary presentation.
Your orders do come out fairly quickly, within 10 minutes upon ordering especially even on peak weekend dinner periods. Kudos to that, and it keeps the guests turnover pretty quick too.
Medicore burgers with sub-par quality
However, I find NBCB burgers quite sub-par. I found their burgers tad under whelming in taste, and are not quite as tasty or offer as good value as the competition at their asking price point. As a set meal, you are not getting what you pay for in the $20 price range. It is not quite the juicy or drippy gourmet burgers nor quality premium flavourful gourmet burgers we come to love, like those we tried at a similar $20 price point at Grub Burgers or Fat Boys.
Moreover, NBCB beef patties are bland and the buns are not even well-toasted. Also, their fish and chicken burgers are dry and do feel lacking in quality compared to the competition. I found they are tad like cooked from frozen fish and chicken fillets just fried and placed between buns. There isn’t much sauce and flavour, just a dry dap of sauce here and there. This results in nothing much to offer between the buns.
Also, I found the burgers tad small in portions, not enough to fill you much for a dinner, maybe a snack will do. For value, there are better options out there. You might have better luck with other competing burger joints we checked out previously, some examples include Wildfire burgers at NAFA, Burgs Burgers or Ordinary burgers at City-square, all which offers more flavourful and much cheaper burgers and sets.
All in all, I would recommend you shortlist NBCB Burgers. In the already very crowded gourmet burger scene, I find it hard for NBCB to stand out in the likes of offerings to the competition. Though well-suited in a good location, there are just better and cheaper burgers out there, not quite the value you at expecting for the asking price.
