Post Teengames 2007 Adventure Race Report (SYFC Teen Games)

0
Teengames adventure race 2007 2nd place

The Teen Games adventure race was today and man it was definitely much longer than that of last year, with 12 checkpoints in total with about 22km+ covered on bike but mostly on foot. The good thing was the increased flexibility when getting to checkpoints- being open ended and not having to go through pre-defined routes. We were there to win, we were confident, we are the first team to complete the race, but came in second… why?

well. I have quite a comprehensive report, read on…

First off, we completed the race in 4hrs 18mins, but we were given a 30mins penalty for being an all guys team in the only mixed category. The 2nd and 3rd teams team came in about 29mins later, the 2nd being an all-boys team as well and thus the same 30mins penalty. So effectively and definitely to their surprise, the 3rd team was the champion team with a timing of 4hrs 47mins. Yes so my team lost by one minute (4hrs 48mins total)

We weren’t told about the 30mins penalty and were completely unaware of it until the end of the race, where the judge started the timer for 30mins and the same time telling us about it only after we crossed the finishing line and our race passport signed. It’s extremely disappointing to lose the champion position, considering that this is also my last race (only under 24s can take part) which I really wanted to win as a finial. There are many factors contributing to that we I shall go though here:

Elrick our 3rd Team member was sick
My team member was not feeling well since last night, was in a very bad shape early this morning when we all decided he rest and home and forgo the race – after the green light from the organizer and the rules stating still be able to continue as a 2 man team. To be fair to all teams we have to cover for his role in obstacles in other words performing additional roles/passes, which severely added alot of additional burden to us & lowered morale.

Teengames adventure race rock climb

For instance a typical 3 person team can tackle high element challenges by simultaneously (1) climbing the natural quarry rock climb with a belayer (2) and abseil (3) from the 30m cliff at the same time. We have to multi-role to clear the wall first even before able to do the abseil. Furthermore being the 1st team in stations, there was alot of pre-preps e.g before the 1st abseil can be done (benefiting future teams but not us), thus adding an additional 20mins.

I led the team into few detours.
Being the Sole Navigator for the Race, I came into a few dead end which costed us about us 10-15mins in total, which placed us around 4-5th place at the start and 2nd checkpoints. But I got up to momentum and turned the tide from the checkpoint 3/12 onwards where we overtook all teams and led the race all the way thereafter. From Diary Farm Road through the whole of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve all the way to MacRitchie Carpark. Ultimately there were some areas where we really flew and widened the gap, so it’s all the story of win-some lose-some. But overall 10-15mins lost is still alot of time.

Darius, our team manager did not receive full rules from the organiser.
Well, beside his shy nature not getting the full details on his side until I push him, it’s not totally his fault – Our team manager was not exactly told of the penalty before the race even after consulting the organiser and making clear that one of one member in our all guy team is unable to make it this morning, no additional information except for the ability to carry on with the race with stated rules are only given. We were unfortunate for Darius having attended the team manager briefing was done by another person instead of the official which actually covered alot of other critical points not covered in his briefing time slot.

Organisation did not make clear of the penalties before race
The fact that we lost by a close margin was because of the lack of official knowledge of the dreaded time penalty (I remembered clenching tightly to my stopwatch going 29mins at the finish when the next team suddenly popped up from the distance and finished the race with the minute). The penalty was not stated in the official rule sheet (though the organiser can always argue that they can make changes without pior notice). Furthermore given the fact that this year’s race was organized a the very last minute, even some of the marshals and sub-organizers do not know of that penalty rule either, where they would have disseminated the information to us teams. Lastly, in the 2007 Teengames promotional brochure saying Mixed U24 (Under 24) for the event is very vague which implied to all of us either all boys, all girls or boys and girls, which is also to dismay to many of the such teams taking part.

We were complacent during the end of the race
Coupled with the cramps from the Bukit Timah summit climb, the beating afternoon sun and a remarkable lead, we actually didn’t push ourselves to run to the finish but constantly kept brisk walking the last 10.9km from Rifle range road to MacRitchie. We could not top up any water at the checkpoints and were dehydrated in the jungle – we were largely conservative but yet confident of winning (having at least a 2-3km lead from the 2nd team), thus deciding not to push our cramps. All these factors didn’t add to the urgency to run though the trails (which we also didn’t know we would so desperately need to win – we would have easily ran ourselves to destruction on the last 3km to the finish just for that!). That on top of the low morale of running a race an incomplete team, (we were really low throughout the race) didn’t give us the drive to run either. Furthermore, given my role in team management and navigation there are also limits to what I can do, our sick and missing teammate Elrick was actually a critical driver when the team needs it most, only the occasional cheers from the marshals along the route was the only driving force constantly reminding us to push on as we are still in the lead.

Thereafter…
We thought about it and raised our issues to the judge, sharing our concerns on the matter, being disappointed with the penalties we weren’t told of. Few of the marshal were rather concerned about the funny placings as well. In the end we were approached by the head organiser who listened to our issues knowing the incident, but I guess that is only beneficial as feedback for next year’s race, they were understanding, but still nothing can be done to the results.

Prize presentation was strange, the champion team was caught completely unexpected on the placing and they were in fact rather embarrassed to receive the prize, $60 adventure race top each and winning trophy having actually came in 3rd. My team got a sports bottle together with some equipment coupons on top of our medals & standard event T-shirt.

But ultimately I am glad our team pulled through without any injuries or accidents. As concerned our mentor was, deep down inside despite the only given 30mins penalty for the general registration “mistake”, we all know that we are still the first team to finish the whole race without any checkpoint penalties (perfect score passport on all the checkpoints itself) and nothing can change that fact. In the end, the only difference are the things we bring back home – minus a champion trophy and in place of “champion” engraved on our medals are the words “1st runner up”.

It feels good sharing and letting out the issues go free from my mind, which had been bugging my since. We are actually ok with the results and respected the judge’s placing. Come to think about though I strongly desire a 1st place, things could possibility be worst, it’s just a great let-down that I cannot participate next year (Under 24)- but life must go on. In fact we are actually more disappointed with ourselves for not doing a good race as there was still great potential to push – only if we knew the importance of 1 minute, till today…

Ngee Ann Kongsi Scholarship submission

1
Teochew Building at Tank Road

Had been sometime since I’ve been to Ngee Ann Kong Si and man has that place changed – it’s not the the old stone lined open air atrium which I recalled many years ago when I was a kid. Instead it’s a new posh air conditioned lobby with automatic door but still largely themed to the old Chinese architecture, rather interesting indeed. Was there to submit my Ngee Ann Kongsi Scholarship documents, which I would definitely want to have a hand in trying for given that I am after all Teochew! Only time will tell when I get called up for the interview which will grant me a bond free $3000 scholarship which will cover me for my whole 3 year in campus.

The rest of the night was spent at Enamel house where the pre-adventure race briefing was held. Covered mainly admin, route and safety aspects of the race. Darius and Elrick were there but Elrick’s rather grumpy and phlegm-my after work, not good for a race tomorrow man. Met our old mentor Monica who is a very cheerful lady, definitely brings a smile to your face when you meet her. May it be a good race tomorrow!

Term Vacation Here! Late Gyming Out

0

Past I of my MST Tests are over and the holidays are on next week. Part II of MSTs will begin when school reopens after the 2 week vacation. Heres what I generally feel of the first half:

Communication Skills for Entrepreneurs – No grade yet, but not bad, even teacher only requested for my slides for keeping after my presentation, good sign.
Industrial Automation Test – 95% achievable score
Statistics Test – 100% achievable score
Mechanics Test – 95% achievable score

Generally though expected 95% is a decent score, it’s not anywhere from what I am aiming and expecting of myself. This semester is really demanding – not only the E-learning but work and the ever piling tutorials and chores, I am just barely coping to meet the standards. Using a Jug & water analogy, I always have a bigger-than-enough jug to fill all my glasses (Tests) 100% full easily, but now I can’t seem to have enough water to fill all my glasses this packed Semester, they just keep coming. Moreover, today is the first time I get called out to the board to do a question on a tutorial I DIDN’T PREPARE FOR! Bwarr!

Dammit this is so unlike me… Guess the preps for the 4 tests early these week left me with no choice but to leave that particular tutorial undone, didn’t expect to see it coming to bite me so soon. This Semester allow redefines the saying: “The Textbook is more useful than the Lecturer” did I mention that lecturers in Year 3 are simply splash and go? I mean hey they are still ultimately just paid to lecture so why care more? After borrowing a few textbooks from the library in prep for MSTs, I now find the book more valuable and useful than some lecturers who serve no other purpose now but to squeeze exam tips from and sign attendance.

On a side note, after listening to Linkin Park’s Minutes to Midnight for almost the whole week, this album is one of their coolest & niffi-est to date with a welcome introduction of few slower songs, guess Chester can take a break from all those screaming once in a while. But overall only about 5 songs really appealling to me, namely: Given-up, Bleed it Out, In Pieces, What I’ve Done and slower ones: Shadow of the Day & Leave out all the Rest.

Finally crossed my 500km mark for the year with a 7.77km run on the threadmill today at the Gym. The is very empty today and since it’s closing time, took some pictures of the usual machines. You know that I’ve always mentioned about Gym training in my weekly training log, but actually didn’t really get to share much on the ones I use regularly, so here are some my favorites of the crop:

Paramount Modular System For Upper Body
Paramount Modular
Bicep Curls
Seated Bicep Curls
Pecor Threadmills, I like!
My MSD Threadmills

The Paramount modular free-cable system is a rather flexible system which can train both Biceps, Triceps, Deltoids and Chest (which I primarily use for). Biceps are best done on the Paramount Seated Bicep Curl which is much better than the standard standing curls as it completely eliminates spinal compression stresses when lifting keeping weighs focussed, but at the expense of freedom of motion. Other good workouts can includes 30 pushups in-between sets for Triceps and 300 Crunches on the Swiss/Gum ball after all 3 Complete set cycles, before ending it all with at least a 5km run on the Threadmill.

Well, It’s Friday Tomorrow! woot!

Teengames adventure race 2007 mess ups

1
TeenGames 2007

My Teengames Adventure Race this Saturday will be unlike last year with a stayover and early morning flag off – Besides having to put off with the inconvenience of transporting our own bikes there (no bike rentals this year) and bringing most of our own standard equipment, we also can’t stay over at the event venue (Salvation Army building) and have to do our bag inspection the night before, go home and have the race the next day (defeating the inspection purpose right?).

Moreover, there is no bag storage or campsite so we have to literally carry all out stuff throughout the whole race, risking wetting our clean clothes in our bag in case we go “swimming” in the water obstacles. To make matter worst, flag off timings are pushed to 7am+ so no cooling night advantage and thrills anymore. Luckily for us, we manage to alias an external bike rental, but for an additional $10 bucks (ouch).

Man lets hope this is all of Murphy Law to come, but I can say, the organization for this year’s adventure race is really totally screwed up. There is alot of pre-administrations this year for a very simple race, lucky for us we have the experience and contacts for this. Wonder how are the other teams doing with these arrangements?

Houston, we have Mid-Semester Tests

0

On a note, next week will be last week before the 2 week vacation break- Hell week more like it, with the following tests to go:

Start of Mid Semester Test week

Monday
CSE Presentation
Industrial Automation Test
Tuesday
Statistics Test
Wednesday
Mechanics Test

Vacation time will be another time to catch up on work and chores lying round the house then it will be Hell Week part II when school reopens with 3 more papers to go before HELLO Final Semester Exams!

This semester will be particularly difficult (seems like the toughest to date) because of the need to clear all my remaining 8 modules before my full time FYP next semester, (and THEY say year 3 is always easier….) on a more positive side, this semester will be my last time going through E-learning weeks and Semester exam for keeps, next semester will be rather relaxed with FYP, so to earn that, it’s “gotta give it all we’ve got this semester”. It’s home run time…

I’ve noticed the site loading pretty slowly now, maybe it could be the Nuffnang javascript ads at the bottom of the page. It had been sometime since they responded with ads suitable for my site, and they always take awfully long to load from their server. Would give them a a week or 2 before considering taking them down, more bad than good, they even don’t make clear how much they pay for impressions.

Nevertheless, had a good ~15km run today, till my mp3 player conked out on the last 3km, dammit:

Mileage for week this week (7 day period)
Tuesday – Sunset way canal route (8km)
Wednesday – Gym 3 Sets Upperbody + Threadmill (9km)
Saturday – 20 Lap afternoon swim
Sunday – Redhill/Tanglin Canal Route (14.65km)
Total Running Mileage for the week: 31.65km
Total Accumulative Mileage for 2007: 495.59km

Steve jobs and Bill Gates at All Things Digital

0

It’s not everyday where you see Steve jobs and Bill Gates together at a go. A special brought to you by at All Things Digital.

Now that must be a really pricey broadcasting setup and stage, with both Steve and Bill combined their annual pay is easily like 700 times how much our Mentor Lee is earns in a year?

It’s Vesak Day, let rock climb!

Adventure Race Rock Climb Practice

It’s Vesak day today, informally “Buddha’s Birthday”. Well wishes going to all Buddhists celebrating Vesak day alike. The day started with me crawling to to Aljunied MRT at 9am on a snoozy public holiday to meet Darius and Elrick for the Adventure race team briefing at Enamel house. Over there we were briefed on the conduct and expectations of the race. Interestingly this year, the inclusion of high elements back into the race with abseiling and natural quarry rock climbing in on top of the usual orienteering, trail biking and running (which will take up the bulk of the race).

We did a few practice climbs at the rock wall there but none of us can actually complete the practice climb! I mean I’ve climbed inclined tiled walls before, but presumably because of few critical tiles lacking in some parts of the wall (& I am not very efficient with the use of inserts either), we all couldn’t get up to a certain point! But that didn’t stop us from doing a “belay haul” haha which we managed to get Darius up to a point without much “climbing” on his side either! Though the natural wall we will be conquering at the quarry will be easily 3 times the height of this 3 storey synthetic wall, the organiser said that it will be easier to climb, about 5mins – so as he claimed. Free abseiling is fun, just like what I did in the Army before only this time, theres a 10 storey rock face to “walk” down from.

Vesak Day 2007

There was a outdoor tentage and a grand monument in front of the Aljunied MRT carpark in line with Vesak day, very impressive glittering landmark in the afternoon sun. Discussed the race plans and preparations with the team over curry rice lunch at the nearby coffeehouse, particularly how we need to go about transporting our mountain bikes to the race venue (there’s no bike and equipment rentals this year so we have to use all our own, which is quite a hassle having to bring to Bukit Timah).

Nevertheless it was going about getting the needed race equipment at the Beach Road army market and cooling down with ice desserts before heading off. Met up with Mum and Dad at the Bukit Merah View Thai Temple to pray for the afternoon before heading home for a much needed rest.

SP Swimming Pool Closure for upgrading renovation

0
SP Swimming Pool Upgrading Closure

Today is the last day SP swimming pool will be open, where it will be closed then to next year. Access to the Staff center and gym will be from the front glass door entrance from the Car Park, you can access it from Food court 5 after making a round outside Food Haven and the carpark facing the Stadium.

Excerpt from message to Staff and Students: Having upgraded the Sports Complex, we next shift our attention to the swimming pools. All three pools (competition, wading and children) will be closed from 1 June 2007 to end-Feb 2008 to facilitate upgrading of the pool filtration plant, replacement of pool and deck tiles and the renovation of pool toilets. The scope of work also includes the installation of a water ionization system which will provide a healthy, mineral water swimming environment for users.

We would like to seek the cooperation of staff and students, especially regular users of the pools, to bear with the closure. We also appeal to occupants and patrons of facilities nearby to put up with inconveniences and access restrictions arising from construction activities.

Should you have any enquires or wish to provide feedback, please contact Ms Chua Wei Lee at 6772-1628.

Broadband-width doubled, is Singtel Mio Good?

5
1.5Mps duh!

Got a letter few days ago that my Singnet broadband speed has been upgraded to 3Mbps from 1.5Mbps without any additional charges, maintaining the usual subscription at about $58/mth. This came very much as a welcome in sharing the bandwidth among the few ummm, 7 computers at home. It’s not the first time I’ve got a free upgrade – I remembered they’ve previously bumped up my old 256kps to 512kps and then up to 1.5Mbps previously, presumably to remain competitive with Starhub (aka ol’ SCV) cable who also have their own fair dishing of free upgrades on their own.

Remembering the old days, come to think about it it’s already more than 10 years since I’ve been a subscriber with Singnet, in fact about 13 years already since the ol’ Singtel “Teleview” days with those noisy but “cutting edge” 14kbps modems (yea- cutting edge… I always go laughing when I read dated computer magazines I’ve stashed from the 90s). Those were the days. I guess one can never appreciate broadband if they weren’t a 56k’s subscriber before – which I unfortunately have to put up during my growing-up years. Still can’t believed that was enough for Counter-Strike and Starcraft multi-player games back then. And laughingly, the whole house would be quiet whenever anyone is up online as no one can ever call through!

Singtel Mio
I had been considering the Singtel Mio for few months now and almost committed to it as my Net contract had expired sometime ago (sparking lots of annoying marketing calls from SingNet as well). Seemingly the Mio, 3.5Mbps Broadband, Home line and Singtel mobile line all at a low rate at $68 basic++ is indeed a very tempting offer (as the acknowledged by the horde of crowds at singtel stores at it’s launch). Though my current Net and Mobile bills alone are averaging a slight $20 margin above the basic Mio $68/mth package, I am considering putting Mio off as my current gateway modem and set-up is the most reliable I have to date- no DCs or home network crashes, so why fix anything which ain’t broke? So as I’ve learnt, Mio too have it drawbacks:

  • Gateway modem have to be ON 24/7 or no phone line
  • Cannot use existing VOIP software (for free overseas calls) with Mio
  • Mio Mobile can only be used on “approved phones”
  • Modem not exceptionally reliable (feedback from friends & acquaintances)

Besides chalking up your electricity bill for the modem, do take note that you cannot make calls (especially emergency calls) in the even of a blackout or power trip. Though that’s not very common in Singapore, but something you have to be aware of in such an event. The most disappointing thing is the limited number of phones which can be used for Mio Mobile- I mean $15/mth for unlimited wi-fi calls is a sweet deal and technically any phone with built-in wi-fi CAN make VOIP calls through Mio Voice, so why limit it and maintaining the partnership monopoly of “approved phones” to few Nokia phones only?

Mio is good, but it seems that I might put it off till something better comes by.

Tentative Plans for my New Quad-Core PC

4

One of my ram modules presumably went kaboom few days ago, as my “workstation” desktop system meter reads 510MB ram instead of 1024MB previously. so I am very much left with 50% of my available capacity with me now. As an analogy there are 2 ways to deal with a faulty car fan belt- you can choose to open the hood and fix the problem or you can simply just turn up the radio and continue driving. Seems that I am choosing the latter, until I can actually find time to troubleshoot.

With hardware prices coming down fast, finally I can look forward during the coming school vacation to get my quad-core system built and move away from the single-core and AGP era to something more respectable. Why quad-core? Well, everybody’s using dual cores now right?

New Items to purchase:

  • CPU: Intel QX (6600/6700/6800) series Quad Core CPU
  • Mobo: Asus Vista-Plus Mobo with Remote
  • Ram: 2x1GB Kingston Hyper-X DDR800 Modules
  • New HD: Hitachi E7k500 500GB harddisk
  • Graphics: Geforce 8800GTS 320MB PCI-E
  • OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit OEM

Having used MSI, Gigabtye, Intel and Via motherboards before, this is my first with Asus, so hope they don’t let me down. Estimated price of all these components are $2000SGD currently, in time it will be within my budget not exceeding $1500, with the biggest chunk from the processor/mobo bundle taking up more than 50% of the total price (approx $1100SGD).

And no, Simlim square hardware prices are actually not affected by the “Great Singapore Sale”. Generally $1000-$1500 is my personal set limit on hardware, not that it’s “expensive” or stingy, but it’s just not worth to spend so much money on something which will be dirt cheap in a few months time, just like handphones, hardware prices will always drop- I’ve seen people spending $200+ on 2GB memory cards or equivalent one year back, and come crying back when it costs only $20 now. My point is that even if you have the cash to spare, it’s wiser to spend it on something else, given the opportunity cost.

Enough said, now here are the things I can savage from current system:

  • Thermal Take SOHO casing
  • 500GB and 2x250GB Hitachi harddisks
  • Sony DVD-writer
  • TDK CD writer
  • WinTV Tuner/Radio
  • Audigy soundcard
  • 32-in-1 Media Card reader
  • Antec Truepower 480W

Technically combined, the eventual system is a Quadcore system with 1.5TB Harddisk space with 2GB DDR800 ram. It seems that once you get a decently well built PC casing, you can stick with it as long as the ATX revisions are unchanged, so I generally advise anyone to get a good casing if you DIY and it can even last you a lifetime.

This system should be able to last me another 5-7 years till the next major upgrade, just like what I anticipated with my current system built in 2001, (with the exception of it already on it’s third motherboard!).
