Disney was kind to host a gaming reception and presentation of the launch to the new Disney Infinity 3.0 figures and game modes at the Lucas film Sandcrawler building at Fusionopolis View, where I got the privilege to try out the game before the launch next month. Disney Infinity is an interactive gaming platform where players have unprecedented freedom and endless opportunity to create stories and play experiences starring the beloved characters from across the worlds of Disney. Building on the success of launching Disney Infinity 1.0 and 2.0, Disney Interactive announced their latest and third instalment to the best-selling hybrid toy/video game to be launched on 1st September 2015.
Greeting you at the reception is a tower of Disney infinity figurines spanning series 1.0 through 3.0. Just like Disney’s Infinity 2.0, the crossover characters allows for easy drop-in/drop-out functionality, allowing kids and families to join in and play together at any time. You can jump straight right into the action through many of the few starter play-sets. The game is largely story-driven in typical renowned Disney story telling fashion, providing, players a multi-level, true-to-property experience.
Developed by Avalanche Software, Disney Interactive (the digital entertainment part of The Walt Disney Company), in partnership with Sumo Digital, Studio Gobo and United Front Games and published by Disney Interactive. Infinity 3.0 will once again enable players to utilize real-world interactive figures to activate original story lines (Play Sets) in the virtual game worlds of popular Star Wars franchises and create new adventures with a variety of characters from Marvel. Jason Moffitt, a Producer from Disney Infinity and the one in-charge of the PC port of the game was present to present on the latest incarnation of his game.
New Infinity Figurines
The thing I love about Infinity is that you need not play the game to enjoy the offerings, the figurines themselves are excellent works of art: well-crafted and painted as a collector’s item, especially if you are an avid toy collector like myself. Expect more figurines of fan-favourite characters from across The Walt Disney Company, like Mickey and Minnie, Sam Flynn and Quorra from Tron: Legacy, Mulan and Olaf, among many others, Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker from the Star Wars universe. Each figure will allow you to play that character in the game and gives you unique powers and abilities for more dynamic gameplay, including customisation using unlocked toys, gadgets and any in-game character from across the Disney Infinity universe as well as a new combat system that carries over to all characters.
If the Marvel franchise is more to your liking, additional Play Sets including a Marvel Play Set offers different environments and distinct gameplay, featuring Hulkbuster Iron Man, Ultron, and other Marvel characters. Additional Infinity 3.0 Edition figures and Play Sets will be announced in the coming months, particularly from the Pixar universe, including unannounced sets from Pixar’s upcoming film Inside Out, and expect upcoming figurines from the animated series Zoopotia too.
One of the issues faced by earlier Infinity series is the inability to include all the playable characters due to DVD space limitations. However, unlike Infinity 1.0 which isn’t compatible with Infinity 2.0, you get backward compatibility of Infinity 2.0 with Infinity 3.0 this time- all Disney Infinity figures, toys and Power Discs, stats and upgrades from the 1.0 and 2.0 editions will be compatible with Disney Infinity 3.0 in the enhanced Toy Box. Also, for the first time, Power Discs booster packs will be sold in specific packs of four and not as blind packs, allowing you to choose the power-ups of your liking, but at an increase in price.
Like the previous Infinity series, gameplay largely revolves around brining to life your favourite Disney characters in one common game across platforms (PlayStation, Xbox One, Wii, PC, iOS and Android), with the PC version being a free to play (free to start) game. The third series incarnation of the Infinity series introduces the Star Wars universe on top of the current Pixar and Marvel Play sets and is the only game where fans can play with Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters together in one gaming experience.
