Fun with QR codes, thanks Japan!
QR codes had been around for sometime, but I guess since with the wave of talk about it and the use of it in advertisements not only in the papers but busstops as well, guess I will just talk about this little Japanese wonder which succeeds it’s older brother, the barcode.
Quote from wikipedia:
Although initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR Codes are now used in a much broader context spanning both commercial tracking applications as well as convenience-oriented applications aimed at mobile phone users. QR Codes storing addresses and URLs may appear in magazines, on signs, buses, business cards or just about any object that a user might need information about.
A user having a camera phone equipped with the correct reader software can scan the image of the QR Code causing the phones browser to launch and redirect to the programmed URL. This act of linking from physical world objects is known as a hardlink or physical world hyperlinks. A user can also generate and print their own QR Code for others to scan and use by visiting one of several free QR Code generating sites.
The Japanese standard for QR Codes, JIS X 0510, was released in January of 1999, and a corresponding ISO International Standard, ISO/IEC 18004, was approved in June of 2000.
“QR Code is open in the sense that the specification of QR Code is disclosed and that the patent right owned by Denso Wave is not exercised.”—from the Denso Wave website. The Japanese version of that site goes on to state, however, that the term QR Code itself is trademarked and that any publication or website using it must also include text that says “QR code is trademarked by Denso Wave, inc.”.
If you have a handphone or pocket PC with internet access, simply zap the codes below to jump onto the site straightaway… or you can click the link below the QR-codes. Lol if the codes are too small to pick up, simply click on it to enlarge. Theres a secret last QR-code!
Just Bin It
Was at Vivocity last Saturday while my parents are round there to do some regular grocery shopping in the area. Interesting in the fresh produce section, they have these signboards in front of every dustbin saying you can throw away anything which you find bad, rotten or not to standard. Won’t be surprised if we see people throwing anything into those bins!
FYP update
The thing with FYP now is lots of devotion spent into it, in fact as with my last weekend, almost working 7 days a week on it. Even making use of my free time out while shopping to check prices of any hardware store I come by “on the way” to search for prices to quote. I think it’s starting to get to me. Otherwise timeline-wise, the 2nd project week was rather slow as we had to deal and sort out contacts we needed for out projects. But things are expected to pick up this week when we send in our finalized designs in requirements to the fabricators and companies involved in providing the parts we require.
The project is just starting to get rather interesting now.
Cool bike wheel LEDs
Remember those LED fans from the previous NDP which paints words on the fan blades upon turning it on? It runs on a rather old concept of frequency timing in response to the blades revolution speed- so when it blinks at just the right rate, it can paint full radial text or even images programmed using only 2 blades. Cool right?
And just when you thought those niffy reflectors are cool on your bike, apparently you can get the same effect on your bike wheels as well, courtesy of SpokePOV on the instructables website you can make your own! Theres even an option to animate the images with one, two or three spoke LEDs. Now this gadget may just redefine everything “bike wheels in the night”, wonder when can you see them on car wheels given the rather dopey idea of ads on hubcaps?

Digital Image archiving and retrieval of the future
(Show more to view video) Some fancy image manipulation and retrieval program, this is technology which revolves with more people using it. I guess the idea of taking flickr sets to reconstruct 3d architecture is simply amazing! I think the demo is running off a standard conventional laptop, so we might be able to all more optimized photo galleries in the near future.

Advertlets Blog Ads Network, putting the ‘Bling’ in ‘Blogging’
You may notice that I am running a new ad campaign from Advertlets.com. Here are some highlights on what this rather interesting blog advertising network offers.

Advertlets.com is an Asian blog/weblog advertising network that offers the remarkably sensible proposition of targeted, unintrusive advertising on user’s blogs and website that benefits the online advertising need of clients as well as the general blogger’s community together with their readers.
Bloggers get advertisements relevant to their readers, allowing readers to be better engaged and catered for, which is ultimately in line with advertiser’s interests- making every of their advertising dollar and message count.

NDP 2007 Preview preview
Was at one fullerton last evening for a client update buffet and invitation at Walton International. It’s planned together with the NDP early rehersal cum full show (aka preview’s – preview). Where we got a nice balcony view of the celebrations from the other end of the bay.
The main bay grandstand is packed with primary school childen tonight and so was the public surrounding area round the esplanade bridge. The show ended with a rather conservatively short 10mins fireworks display with a myriad of different firing and exploding styles. Hung out at Boat quay for the rest of the night, where the place later was swarming with primary school children thereafter heading home to board their school buses parked nearby. The goodie bag this year looks kinda cool, it’s like an imitation version of the popular Crumpler sling bag.
I guess we all got so acustomised after watching so many fireworks numerous times a year (CNY, NDP, Christmas, New Year), I find that it’s harder to wow people in Singapore with fireworks now.
